Bad SAT, good GPA = good collegE?

Hey guys, I'm new here! Anyways, my current GPA is about 3.3 and by end of the first sem. of senior year I plan to bring it upto about 3.6. However, I've worked hard on my SAT but it just isnt improving much. By current score's about 1700 and I believe that it'll peak at around 1800-1830. I am a jr right now, I work really hard and have alot of good EC's. Do I have a chance at getting into a top 30-50 ish college? Is like top 15 out of range?

Top 15 might be stretching it, but top 50 colleges not so much. You could probably gain admission to your state's flagship public university. Depending on where you live, that could be in the top 50.

Top 15 is really out of range..

bump! I want to hear some more opinions... please guys??

3.3/3.6 is really not a good GPA; top 15 schools are pretty much out of reach unless you achieve national fame somehow.
If you are looking for artificial prestige, just do your best; apply to 30-50 schools that you like, let fate make your decision. Imo, anything outside of top 30 is all a blurb, not that much of a difference.

There are some great high-ranked liberal arts colleges that don't require the SAT. Perhaps the best-known schools in this group are Middlebury and Bowdoin.

Is that GPA weighted or unweighted? Are you taking the hardest classes?

Well, in what state do you live?

I live in Virginia... but I'm not interested in colleges like UVA/Vtech/W&M. Somewhere like NYU or boston maybe

Those are slight reach schools unless you have outstanding awards and honors / extra curriculars / volunteer work. I would definitely apply to backups along with those schools.

Find out which schools you would like to apply to and find the threads for them here in CC. The Early Decision/Early Action thread can tell you who got in, who got deferred, and who got rejected outright (with stats). This will give you an idea of what you are up against. Don't get discouraged, though. You may have that particular thing any one of these schools could be looking for. Unless you apply you won't find out.

not knowing a whole lot about you from your post, i think you're a moderate student. average GPA (somewhat low for some colleges ) and lowish SATs. what kind of high school do you attend? rigorous? are you taking honors and APs? all these things will matter, but your stats aren't too strong. i don't think you'll have a shot at NYU, Middlebury or Bowdoin. just a reality check, and in NO WAY do i mean to be insulting. when you say Boston, it depends what school? good luck. hope this helps.

I take as much had classes as I believe I can handle. I took 4 honor classes in freshman year, 2 in soph year, taking 2 aps and 1 honor this year(jr). Ive done a sport each year of my highschool (9,10,11), do several clubs, such as keyclub, martial arts club, etc... and i've been doing hospital volunteering since 10th grade (have over 200 hrs currently in my logbook). Unforunately i gotta admit but i'm not a very smart student but hard worker and an ambitious person. I go to a rigorous high school, i guess, considering it's top 80 in best high schools in america.
