Yeah, Harvard is a big one for sending out stuff. Both my kids heard from them. Every year, on CC that question comes up from some kid--does it mean something that Harvard sent me a letter? In a word, no.

OTOH, my S's first choice, Columbia, never sent a bit of mail before he applied (for that matter, they hardly sent a thing, even acknowledgement of his enrollment, for months afterward, either. Guess they're just a taciturn bunch...:))

S1 applied to 3 large state u's. One sent lots of mail and made phone calls, one sent a moderate amount of mail...no calls, and the third (the school he is now attending and H is an alumni) sent next to nothing. After aceptance first choice sch. sent the requisite housing forms and dining info. and some emails about scholarships but it still was not an overwhelming amount of mail.
I guess they figured he was planning to attend so they didn't need to talk him into it.

Zoosermom, if it's been more than a year since your daughter signed up on the college web site, she might want to sign up again -- it's possible that they purge their mailing lists annually, simply to avoid sending email or snail mail to kids who have already graduated from high school.

My S never got any mail from his 1st choice school either (the place where he is now), but I think that I know why: as far as I know, they only purchase the list of NMSQT semifinalists from the college board, and send viewbooks to them. S was commended and never made it onto their radar. Still, they liked what they saw when the application was in. ZM, hope that the same holds true for your daughter!

(He did get mail from Yale I remember; but I don't remember anything from Princeton--maybe Harvard, I'm not sure).....it's all so cloudy in my memory.

Son never got much mail from CMU (class '06) or from any other schools. He did get an unsolicited letter from CMU as a HS soph or early junior. He did all his research online(56k dialup) in 2001 and never asked for printed materials. NMF. +5%er. Public. no major hooks other than focus. No visitations to any school. CMU sent the school catalog and view disk only after he was accepted.

I just had to note that my son was accepted early to Caltech (he's a freshman there now), but he didn't get mail from them last year. Other schools bombarded him and we kept hearing from some of his friends that they were receiving mail from Caltech..so I think it really does depend on which mailing list you happen to land on. And there were a few schools that kept mailing him stuff long after he'd withdrawn his application due to his early acceptances at the two schools he was most interested in.

zoosermom - I mentioned these posts to my son, who had never received a speck of anything from his ED school (writing those essays right now), despite two visits, filling out cards, registering for their admissions database, sending scores, etc etc.
Anyway, he called this afternoon, and was told they have NO records of any kind for him, and that they DO usually try to follow up and send info re: areas of interest, applications, etc.
So, if you have any doubts, it certainly can't hurt to call, esp if your daughter's school is one that takes interest into account. If nothing else, S. will be happy to have some current publications to look through.
