Today I received a score on a physics exam, and it was horrible. I thought I was a good physics student until today. I was respected for my intelligence, but after this, people will begin thinking of me as a moron. I know for a fact that I am better than the score; it was a result of carelessness. My only asset is intelligence, so the score is affecting me severely. Should I kill myself?

...Please tell me this is a joke. And if it's not, then please don't kill yourself.

Boy oh boy oh boy. School isn't worth killing yourself over. Please let this be a joke, because even talking about something like this isn't very...... good.

even a joke about this isn't very good.
everyone gets bad test scores. so if everyone with bad scores killed themselves there would be very few people left!

don't kill yourself kid, just do better on the next test... the sun will come up tomorrow you know!

just put a smile on your face

I'll stop with the corny song lyrics now

Don't worry, be happy.

But seriously, let it go. There will be many, many other tests. Don't let something as trivial as this mar your thinking.

Ahand123, I'm going to take you seriously because if you are serious and we DON'T take you seriously, that would be tragic.

You didn't say what grade you're in, what physics course this is, etc. But of course as you get further and further along in your studies, the courses get harder. One bad grade doesn't mean you're not smart. My son -- of whom I'm very proud -- was admitted ED to an Ivy, but right now he's getting a D (yes, a D) in his math class. I know he'll pull out a B or B+ before the quarter is over, and I suspect you will too.

Also, know that physics is TOUGH for a lot of people. A LOT of people. Even smart ones. (It was never my favorite, 900 years ago.) If most classes have come easily for you and physics does not, you may need to buckle down and actually work at the course. That doesn't mean you're stupid. Consider this: You'll have to adapt and learn a new way to learn. You might have to outline the text, make notecards, actually study, and all that other mickey-mouse stuff. It doesn't mean you're stupid.

My husband, who also went to an Ivy, can't learn a foreign language to save his life. Different people have different skills.

Don't kill yourself. Your parents could not bear the grief. They appreciate and love your many assets besides your intelligence, believe me.

psh, just for the info, I'm supposedly smart too cough (straightAstu), but I flat out C'd and D'd my first 2 AP Physics tests of the year - cried some - whined to my friends some - cursed the world some - but kept smiling, finally got used to the way the class and tests worked, and got my A for the class

seriously, after those two tests, I was pretty upset because I thought people would think I was stupid too (and I also knew those tests grades were not 'me')... but I just moved on, and thought about the next grade and kept looking forward. you can't change your one bad test grade, but you can make sure you don't repeat it and just do better the next time

it's not the end-all of life to get one bad grade on a test, I really hope you aren't seriously considering suicide, because that grade does not define your abilities//worth as a person - zoom out and look @ the big picture.

go eat some chocolate, watch some TV, cheer up! <3

I hope that you're making a sick joke, but just in case:
I am smart -- qualify for Mensa, graduated from an Ivy, still, in grad school, when I had to take graduate level statistics, I struggled to get a "C" in the class. I literally was spending hours on homework that others breezed through. When I got my final grade, and it was a "C," I was thrilled.

Being smart doesn't mean that one can get straight As or that even when one studies hard, one can always pass tests. Not passing a test certainly doesn't mean that one should kill oneself.

No matter how smart a person is, there always will be some courses that will be challenges. Just deal with it even if it means you get a C. Despite my C, I got my doctorate, and, frankly, even though lots of people knew I struggled in that course, I would be very surprised if anyone thought I was stupid.

Meanwhile, you're struggling in physics, which is harder than stat. Just do your best -- talk to the teacher, get tutoring, and whatever grade that you do realize that if physics is not your strength, you certainly have other strengths to rely on.

The person is a 12th grader.

you have to understand that life is more than about taking tests. life is about interacting with people, understanding yourself, and finding your passions. have u learned that nobody is perfect? well i'm sorry to break the truth to you, but you're not going to ace every test in the world. relax, calm down, figure out what you did wrong and how u can better improve the results. if you're going to kill yourself over 1 test, then you need serious help.

I'd like to hear back from the OP. Ahand123, are you OK?? Update, please.

okay, the ones making suicide comments, stop it..it isn't funny, or clever..and it is potentially dangerous...your immaturity shines through

to the OP- don't fret....it was a test, and physics, just do your best...a C is average...and there is nothing wrong with being average in some aspects of your life

one bad exam will NOT cause people to think that you're a moron! just don't tell people. trust me, i can relate to you. i thought that i was an amazing math student until this year. i'm currently getting a C in calc bc even though i work my ass off. yesterday i got a test back, and i got a 5 out of 25!

you're still a good physics student. frankly, i look up to people who understand physics because i'm awful at it. everyone screws up, and one test won't destroy your grade. failing isn't a death sentence. just let it roll off your back. currently, i'm really looking forward to the next math test because i know that i can do better, and i relish the chance to prove that i am a better math student.

You could just not tell anyone. But usually it's wiser to blab bad scores to all your classmates so people don't end up hating you and being jealous. At least that way they'll think of you as human and not someone they should sabotage sometime or blame for wrecking the curve. You'll get less respect, but often praise is envy in disguise. If you're mostly concerned about what students will think of you your test score might actually be a disguised blessing.

I got a 78 on my first DiffEq test last semester. It was incredibly ironic since (a) it was really easy material, and I only did badly because I made a sign error and forgot to divide by something (b) I NEVER do this badly on math tests...the lowest I've gotten in the past two years was a 95. So basically, I was really, REALLY shocked when I saw the score. I seriously stared at that paper for 10 minutes with my jaw dropped. And then I told everyone about it. Which I think made them like me better -- they seemed a bit more relaxed when talking to me. I wasn't voted the best DiffEq student in the class, but I think it was pretty much worth it given how people acted towards me after that.

You KNOW your test score was carelessness, and KNOW you know the subject, so as long as you know you can still get a good grade you shouldn't have much to worry about. It's the beginning of the semester. You'll do well on every other test. I pulled my 78 up to an A by getting a 100 on the next test and a good grade on the final exam. (Not to mention if you pull up your grade you'll earn respect from your teacher as a hard worker, rather than being treated as one of those super-intelligent people who just get good grades naturally.)

Between the students, the teacher, and the grades, I think we've pretty much got our bases covered. Good luck -- you know you can do it.

Ahand123, talk to us.
