Bama Laundry

Hello- Just visiting  I did want to offer, on the front loading machines they actually get mold around the rubber ring between the ‘barrel’ and the glass door when the machine stays closed too often with wet clothes. When you put your clothes in and out of the washer this residue can come off on your clean clothes. To combat this in a dorm is difficult as you have no control on how long everyone else lets their clothes sit wet.
Although it is not fun, you can take an old towel and run it around the underside of the ring and wipe out the residue. It may take a few swipes. After this, run the washer on the hottest setting with a cup of bleach. You may be able to request maintenance do this as most students are not going to have bleach, and it does cost a few dollars and time.
Just my two cents.

Thanks, blueiguana, for the tip.

I would not recommend doing the bleach run, though, as I’ve done this at home, and I do run a couple of loads of empty wash to make sure the bleach is out.

I’m sure a busy student is not going to take the time or spend the money to do this, and I would hate to be the student after him who winds up with bleach stains on their clothes.

I do wonder if people do leave their wet clothes sit. I recently did laundry while I traveled and was amazed at how many people let their clothes sit in the washers of a public place overnight.

When I was in college, if you didn’t take your clothes out the washer after say an hour, it wound up on the folding table so someone else could use the machine.

I was always too much of a Southern lady to do such a thing, but I have seen many students do just that.

The washers are Maytag commercial washers that are very similar to what you have in your home except that they have a limited selection of settings (the washers have 6 buttons, the dryers have 3). The washers are serviced by an outside company and UA cleaning staff do clean the laundry rooms at least weekly.

Students should be cautious of the fact that red has a tendency to bleed. If your child is bringing something that needs to be washed separately the first time, I highly suggest you wash it at home beforehand.

^^Montegut,
Arrhgghh!! I was just coming back on because I forgot to mention to run a load of whites after the bleach. Thanks for catching it!!

IIRC there is a text message thingy on the machines so you get a text message when your laundry is done. No excuse for leaving your wet laundry in! Seriously!

Thanks for the clarification on the NorthFace jacket Seatide - never in a million years would I have thought of that as business casual! DS is gonna have a blast :)

Looks like the laundry service will include per-item pricing. Plus, looks like they can do dry cleaning.

*Before I go to Goodwill with was my gym/casual wardrobe, would anybody out there be interested in Size Large Pink T shirts, Size 32 waist Formerly Khaki (can now be called Kh-inki, cross between Khaki and Pink) mens shorts, and Size Large Pink Polo shirts. My former Crimson Tide T’s are now Pink Tide T’s. I won’t even dare to go to the gym with my new pink jockey shorts. I can bring these items to Outdoor Action (except the jockey’s) and leave them on the table inside the entrance to Riverside West.

This thread got me in trouble as it spurred me on to get my son used to doing his laundry. MY BAD!!! Unfortunately, he practiced on my clothing. Wife said he takes after me in the laundry department! *

To avoid this in the future
always have on hand Rit Color Remover (sold where Rit dye is sold).

As soon as the “pink clothes” are found in the wash, immediate rewash with the Rit Color Remover on the hottest temp the fabrics can handle.

This has saved many a wash.

:)

some people also routinely use Shout Color Catchers. I use those, too. (I reuse them a few time before tossing!)

Suits are common for CBH presentations.

Business department students also wear suits for presentations on a regular basis.

It’s just a good idea to have “professional wear” in the closet. There sometimes isn’t a lot of warning that “dress up” clothes are needed/expected.

My older son was invited to watch a friend perform in B’ham for a symphony. Suits were expected.
