Band scholarship opportunities

Im a senior in high school, and very involved with band. I play trumpet and am exceptional at it , but I’m not sure if I want to continue in college because I want to go into pharmacy and pre-pharm is very demanding. Basically the only way ill continue playing is if i get some kind of scholarship money. (id be willing to do pretty much any form of band jazz, classical, marching, orchestra) The schools ill be applying to and hopefully accepted to are the University of Texas, University of Houston, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor, and the University of Washington. Any replies are greatly appreciated!

What are your stats?

How much can your parents pay each year for 4 years?

Thanks for that link. By stats did you mean test scores/grades or like music awards?

@Miamidolphinfan GPA, ACT/SAT scores, AP scores, etc. And BTW Baylor doesn’t really give out music scholarships. Even MUSIC MAJORS get nothing, soo… Baylor is a bit expensive, but so is UT Austin because they give out NO merit scholarships (unless EXCEPTIONAL stats) or there is need. Hope this helps :stuck_out_tongue:

What is your home state? How much will your parents pay each year?

And don’t forget, you will have to audition as well, or submit some type of recording. The music forum thread on CC has valuable insight.

Yeah i know UT doesn’t really give out merit and i know for my scores wouldn’t get me much if any thing. I actually know a trumpet player who got a full ride to Baylor for trumpet. He went to my school, but he was definitely better than me since he was ranked 4th in the nation.

Ok thanks I didn’t know there was a forum for that!

I live in Texas and I’m not sure how much they are going to pay a year. Do you know how much of an influence that they own their own business will have on financial aid opportunities?

That Baylor trumpet player likely is majoring in music performance, and may have gotten free tuition, not a free ride, unless he got some other awards that stacked. Anyway, the point is, he didn’t get a free ride for just being a top trumpet player; he must be majoring in performance. Just being part of the band isn’t going to get a student much in merit. (“Many [Baylor] music students qualify for academic and various additional scholarship funds, in addition to music merit scholarships.”]

Your parents owning their own business can affect aid, especially depending on what type of schools you apply to. CSS Profile schools can be brutal to those who own their own businesses.

We don’t know how much your family earns from the business, we don’t know what assets your parents have. We don’t know how if they have their retirement savings in “real retirement accts” or if they just have them in regular investment accounts.

ASK your parents how much they’ll pay each year. YOU NEED to know that answer!!

What are your stats?

To get a little music merit money (1-2,000 / yr) you need to find a college without a school of music that needs you to help fill an orchestra, band, etc. If you truly are not that interested in pursuing music - I would not let $1,000 influence my decision where to study pre-pharmacy…

University of South Carolina (Columbia campus?) awards marching band scholarships which basically reduces OOS tuition to in-state ($13,000 savings) per year, if you’re not already receiving merit aid. Their Honors program is highly regarded (nice dorm too.)

OK I’ll ask them. Any way I’m sorry I didn’t post my stats earlier I missed that comment somehow.

GPA: 3.5-3.6 (somewhere between that range, the counselors still haven’t updated GPA or class rank from the end of junior year)
Rank 120/440 (once again not updated and will go up)
ACT: 30
SAT: 1850 (retaking both in about a month or two)
Have about 100 hours of service as of now.
Also Ill be doing the pharmacy tech training program at CVS, and I’ve worked at my parents bakery every summer for the last few years.
