I would like to play clarinet in a band or orchestra in college but want to major in science. I couldn’t find a band on Amherst site that seems to have clarinetist. Anyone know how extracurricular music works thru Amherst or thru the 5 colleges. Thanks.

That's the URL for the Music site at Amherst College. You might try looking under Performance Opportunities or Five College Music Program.

There's no band, but there is a symphony orchestra. Being a science major won't preclude playing in the orchestra by any means.

Thanks, best I can tell, to play in a concert band I would have to go to UMass to play the clarinet. Anyone know how that works? Is there a bus or shuttle to UMass, are the auditions there, is it alot of time commitment since I want to be a science major?????

There is a free bus to each of the Five Colleges and other random locations around the area. Going to UMass takes about 5-10 minutes from Converse Hall (where the bus stop is). I've actually met a fair amount of Smith people who come to Amherst for dance which is about a 30-45 minute bus ride, so I'm sure going to UMass is perfectly feasible.

As far as being a science major, it'll differ from semester to semester depending on how many labs you take. However, it is perfectly manageable as classes and extra curriculars almost never conflict.
