I will transfer to NYU from a college in Washington state. (I am also an international from Hong Kong)

I understand that I have to pay some deposits, and I want to do so by US bank's checks ...

but I am also going home on June 15, and my bank doesn't have branches in NYC, so I have to close my bank acccount, transfer money back home and bring money back to NYC~

yet I worry how quickly NYU can clear my checks ... I don't wanna have bounced checks ..

Bank of America is really good for college students, its like free for 6 moths and then its only $3.95 a moth after that. pretty good.

HSBC is not a checking bank, its a global savings bank. and really not what you want.

also make sure you dont have to keep a certain amoun of money in the bank at any given time. I know my mother who is with Chase, she has to have like $1000, she can take it out but she gets fined.

vinny... what would be the perk of the Bank of America student checking for $3.95/month when I can get a free student checking with Wachovia, SunTrust, BB&T, etc.?

I personnaly dont have a Wachovia, in my area. I only have Chase, country and bank of America. I went with Bank of America.

plus i would rather use a bank with more backing to it. Sure they are almost all FDIC insured, but its a hassle. Fleet & Bank of America has alot of Integrity after the merger is finsihed early july.

vinny... I was just asking the question to see if you could explain some difference. My question was not even related the OP or intended to be a smart-arsed comment.

that's OK. my dad said it's OK for me to open one account in HK for HSBC and then use it in USA~

I just don't know if I should open one temporary account to transfer my money from my currrent state to NYC .... or should I just transfer the money back home?
