I have not thought of using financial software nor of doing online banking (besides checking my balance.) does anyone else here use financial software?

I write checks to pay for activities in one student organization I’m in at Cornell, which is by far the easiest way to do that. also if I owe my parents money I use a check to pay them. that might be kind of inefficient or whatever but they don’t do any kind of electronic banking and it does work.

my son pays me for his phone bill each month. He as an automatic payment setup in his bank account that mails me a check each month. Comes in the mail like clockwork every month. Kind of that outta sight, outta mind thing. I doubt I would get it regularly if he had to actually write the check.

But I see the point that you might occassionally need to write a check. Guess since I can’t even remember the last time I needed too. And now people can even use their iphones to take debit/credit cards. Not too mention access their banks and write a check online.

lol thanks for all the information so far, but would anyone please be able to answer my question? I need to know soon because I just received a scholarship and would like to put in a bank account that I can easily access in Cornell, most preferrably TD Bank. My parents use TD bank and it is right in front of my house. I’m wondering if ATM or a branch is near or in the Cornell campus, and whether they charge you extra fee for using other bank’s ATM becuase my sister who goes to CUNY does not get charged extra fee for using other bank’s ATM in the campus.

I have never heard of TD Bank. if you look at the map of their locations you will see that there are not any near Ithaca, or even in the greater Finger Lakes region. [ATM/Store Locator](<a href=“Find a Branch or an ATM Near You – TD Bank”>Find a Branch or an ATM Near You – TD Bank)
as you are considering banks you should check their websites because they realize location is important and so provide that information pretty readily from their front pages.
I do not know about being charged for using other ATMs but I thought being charged for that was pretty standard practice. there’s certainly no well-advertised deal or anything.

yeah you do get charged, but some campuses make it so that you dont get that extra charge for using other bank’s ATM. I guess Cornell is not one of them. Okay thanks! I guess I have to go with B of A

Is there a US Bank in the Ithaca area? My D has an account with them. None of the other campus/Ithaca banks listed by posters are here in our town. We like the convenience of having all of our accounts at the same bank.

Does a student really need a local bank in Ithaca? If one has a debit card and a checking account, does one really need a local bank? I would imagine one could cash checks on campus somewhere if necessary. If my D needs cash now she often gets if via cashback with her debit card.

If one has a PLUS system ATM, how much is one charged to use an ATM on campus if the ATM does not belong to your bank.

It’s better to keep all accts with one bank. In our case, we have premiere service, so our daughter also gets similar service. Our bank waives a lot of fees because of our standing with them, and it means no fees for ATM usage. When she studied abroad last year, they also didn’t charge any fees for usage.

I personally do not see any need to have a local bank acct. Almost everything could be charged using a debit or credit card. My daughter takes cash out maybe once or twice a month. She has a job with Cornell, and she gets direct deposit from work. Sometimes when she gets a check or two from someone, she would send it back home and we would deposit it for her.

Hopefully other banks will start catching up with technology. The bank my son uses at his school, USAA allows him to use his iphone to deposit his checks. he just takes a picture of the front and back and uses the iphone app to deposit it. For those that don’t have an iphone app, they can scan their checks for deposit. Would seem the big national banks should catch up and offer the same thing.

i would just use Bank of America, which is what i have. when i need to deposit my checks from work, i just go to the ATM in collegetown and get bubbletea :)

next year, i can use the ATM on west campus. it’s not that bad, even though there are just these 2 ATM’s that i know of.

Banks in the Ithaca Area:
-Bank of America (ATM on West Campus, in Collegetown; Branch on the Commons)
-HSBC (ATM in Willard Straight; Branch on the Commons)
-M&T Bank (ATMs around campus; Branch on Campus)
-Tompkins Trust Company (ATMS around campus; Branch on campus)
-Fingerlakes Credit Union (ATMS around campus; Branch on campus)

If you need to open an account at one of these, they usually set up during Orientation week on Ho Plaza, ready to help out new students!
