I'm about to set up a debit-card account, and can anyone tell me if there are any banks right on campus. I was thinking about HSBC, as I know there is an Ithaca Branch. But is there one right on Cornell? Thanks!

i heard M&T and Bank of America are close.

There are a few Tompkins Trust and CFCU ATMs on campus.

HSBC has an ATM at Willard Straight. there’s an HSBC branch, though, if you need them, in the commons AND on triphammer.

On campus there is M&T, CFCU, and Tomkins Trust Company (if my memory serves me correctly). I went with M&T since they have a few branches near my home as well as being located on campus.

bank of america as a branch in commons and atms on west campus and in collegetown. their atms accept scan checks/cash for deposit instantly so you don’t really need a branch office right there.

i say go with the bank that your parents have acess to at home.

for example bank of america is the only bank that’s in my town so i went with them…my parents can deposit money into my account directly from my hometown

HSBC is the world’s biggest bank so this might work for international students better…

What banks are these: HSBC, M & T, CFCU? What do those inititals stand for? Thanks.

Is there a Chase on(close to) campus?

to find out what banks (if any) are close…go to their website and do a zipcode search for 14853 (cornell’s zip code)

@ Kim705: there is this handy website called… Google

@ zakaqel: there’s no chase on campus, my friends who have chase generally use HSBC’s ATMs bc it has the lowest fee.

I just opened a college checking account with M&T…I went to a branch near my house and they told me that almost all of the college students who have opened accounts there go to Cornell or Binghamton.

Er… HSBC stands for the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, but no one ever calls it that. Ever. It’s still the legal name in parts of Asia, but it’s not brand they use any more, and, in most of the world, it was never the legal name - it’s always been HSBC.
Are you sure you’ve never heard of them? They sponsor Formula One races and have the ads that say “The World’s Local Bank” in every airport and train station - appropriate as they’re the largest bank in the world.

M&T Bank, on the other hand, is a smaller (but not small) bank that I’ve only ever seen in the Northeast. Most of the branches near me were sold.
To HSBC.

Thank you sebcatright.
I was looking to find a bank w/ not a lot of ATM fees and not familiar with the northeast banks listed on this post and it looks like M&T fits the bill (Even if they end up owned by HSBC)… No I never heard of HSBC! Not a sports fan and CC102 you could be a little nicer. :)

As a parent, I like Bank of America. As Resurgambell said. I can just go online and transfer funds from my own B of A account to my Ds account in an instant. They also have great ATM’s that scan checks and cash, so you can deposit everything all in one spot.

With CornellCard and debit cards I really don’t think anyone should need to go to a bank for anything. If you get a job on campus, they are going to direct deposit your pay anyway.

HSBC is a very good bank and would rather choose it over Bank of America. HSBC knows what to do with your money, is available in most Northeastern States of America, and if you ever were to travel overseas, there’s probably a HSBC readily available for you to use.
They also are good with your money, and if they thought someone was buying illegal purchases on your account, they will call you in lightning speed. They did for me, and I felt happy that they were concerned with my money, no matter how little I had =)
Plus, there are less complaints with HSBC, and more with BoA, I think, you can google that for yourself.
Plus their Debit/Credit cards are through Mastercard, and I like those commercials =D The card even has paypass, swipe and go!

^ good points, but i wouldn’t say that HSBC “knows what to do with your money” - if you want to talk about what banks are NOT dicking around with your money through CDOs and other ■■■■■■■■ mortgage bundles, then out of all of the banks available to cornell students, HSBC would NOT be the “best” choice in that matter (of course it might be better than BoA… but that’s not saying much, is it?). it’s lost a ton of money in the securities market, but then again, that’s to be expected from a large international bank.

go with what you want - small or large bank. i chose HSBC bc i know i’m going to study abroad at some point, and it’s also a bank that has a large presence in all of the major cities of the US and the rest of the world.

oh, and @ kim705 - quite honestly, it wasn’t personal. it was a lazy question you asked - one that you could have very easily found the answer to - and so it was a lazy answer i gave.

DO NOT DO BANK OF AMERICA.

Use M&T which has a branch right inside WSH and right in Collegetown. Or use HSBC.

why nought BOA?
