Banking at Cornell

So, S went to talk to his bank (TD) about banking in Ithaca and they do not have locations out there and said that with his student account, he would not be eligible for reimbursement of fees associated with using a non-TD ATM.

So... we are going to keep that account as an emergency method for us to transfer funds to him (I'm also on the account and can transfer money directly from my own account to his), but he will be signing up for a local account somewhere when he gets to school. We figure the local banks will all be out vying for the kids' business when they arrive.

Any thoughts on which local bank is best/most accessible ATMs/etc.? I assume they all have online banking but a bank with easy-to-use online banking would be a plus, and obviously a no-fee student account would be the desired account.

Thanks!

not completely sure–i know M&T and tompkins county does

but I have bank of america which is nice because it’s accessible from home/across the country too and they have an atm on west campus, in collegetown, and a bank+atm down in the commons
they have online banking and i’m pretty sure i’m on a student account

does bank of america have ATMs up in north campus (RPCC and/or Appel)?

bump – anyone else have suggestions about which banks are best for students at Cornell?

Bank of America is probably the best one. There’s a location in the Commons and ATM’s in Collegetown and West Campus. For some reason there are no ATM’s on North, though.

There’s also a HSBC bank not terribly far from the mall, and if I’m not mistaken there’s a HSBC ATM somewhere on campus.

A lot of students use M&T too. They’ve got ATMs in Willard Straight, Noyes (convenient if you live on West Campus), and Collegetown.

no Chase???

*no Chase??? *

Nope. It’s funny too since Chase loves to recruit on campus. The closest bank is in Syracuse, and as a Chase user myself, that’s much too distant for me.

There’s an HSBC branch in downtown Ithaca and the HSBC ATM is in Willard Straight Hall on central campus.
And if you travel for any reasons, there’s a good chance of finding an HSBC branch overseas to make withdrawing money a bit easier.

B of A is what we went with. During frosh move-in they were offering free student checking etc. no problem with the atm location for my son to get cash etc when needed.

@Islander when you say there’s a BofA location in the Commons, is that on campus, or somewhere in Ithaca?

It’s in downtown Ithaca. The Commons is basically a section of State St. reserved for businesses. On a map, there’s a part where State St. temporarily does not exist.

Thanks. That looks pretty close anyhow :)
