What's the best way to set up a student's bank account? Local Williamstown?
thanks

When we attended accepted students’ day last spring, we noticed two banks in the area – one local bank (I forget the name) and TC Bank. We asked and were told that both banks will be able/ready to open new students’ accounts when they arrive in the fall. Since there is a TD Bank in our area, we went ahead and opened an account for S there, figuring that it will easier for us to get money to him in a hurry if we need to.

We set up an account at Williamstown Savings Bank. I think there may be an ATM from that bank on campus in Paresky. No charge for the account. I established a link to my checking account and can electronically transfer funds in 1 or 2 days.

I believe the local bank may even add a modest sum (? $50) for opening a new student account with them.

We didn’t use the local banks and instead set up an account with Charles Schwab, which offers a student account (student must be 18) which offers full reimbursement of all ATM Fees anywhere and there are no other fees. We can transfer money into our student’s account online and the student account even earns interest. Our child has to fly to Williams so this way money can be withdrawn while traveling with no ATM fees.

thank you all for the very helpful info.
