Does anyone know what bank I should open a new account with that will be convenient next year? Are there ATMs on campus that don't hit you with extra charges?

NDFCU - Notre Dame Federal Credit Union. Set it up when you get on campus. Debit Card/Check Card/ATM card all rolled into one, with fee-free ATMs all across campus. Not to mention good rates, etc.

I plan to use this ^.

ND Credit Union is the place to go...lots of ATM's on campus, plus lots of branches...

We were going to set up a new account here in our home town. That way I could deposit $ for daughter etc. But, with high atm fees, maybe this isn't the way to go...hhhmmm Are there online services that would allow $ transfers to student accounts? What do others do? dd, you mentioned ND credit union...that was there when we were there!

Irishcali--if you plan ahead you can use your own bank's online bill pay service to transfer money to your daughter. It's not instant, but if you plan to regularly transfer her some money it's quite convenient. Once her ND credit union account is open, you can set up a recurring automatic bill with her as the payee and her account number at ND as the account number. Your bank will mail a check automatically on the schedule you set.

I use this system for my kids and it usually takes about a week for the money to appear in their account. The thing I like about it is that I can do one-off payments in addition to my regular monthly payment, or I can go in and modify the amount quite easily. I have had the kids set up this way for a couple of years; my husband pays his child support this way (bill payment to his ex wife's bank account) and we've never had a problem. All you need to do is schedule the payment far enough in advance so that it arrives when you want it to.

There are plenty of banks around South Bend and Mishawaka. I personally would advise that you use NDFCU but there are also First Source Banks and Chase Banks in the area.

Mombot, thanks! It's so funny because I was just paying bills through my online banking and never thought to add her school account as a "bill"! That's a good idea though. Thanks!
