My S will be at ND next year. Was wondering if there is one particular bank that has ATMs on campus so we can set up an account for him at that bank.

Notre Dame Federal Credit Union is the bank on campus. They have bunch of ATMs on campus and don’t charge a fee for students to withdraw money, even if they don’t have an NDFCU account. However, if you have an account with another bank, they might charge you a fee to use an outside ATM.

An account with NDFCU is probably the most convenient. However, a lot of students use other banks. I used Wells Fargo while I was at ND and never had a problem with it. On the rare occasions I needed to go to the actual bank, there was a branch in South Bend. I didn’t need a lot of cash until Junior/Senior year when I started going off campus more frequently anyway.

Thanks, NDFCU does sound convenient for the student. Any idea when students open accounts there and how parents put money in their account if there are no branches nearby? Thanks.

NDFCU is part of a network that includes CU’s in other parts of the country. If you are already a CU member, check to see if it is part of the network. You may not need to open a separate account.

We are not a CU member, but I will look for affiliated member nearby and set up an account for my S before the fall. Thanks for your help.

NDFCU will send your student some information during the summer about opening an account. Then they will have tables set up at LaFun during orientation to finalize the account (showing a photo id). Or the student can just set up the account during orientation.

Thanks so much!
