Banneker Key email strange

I recieved this email after school today, as did my friend, who was in the car with me. We are both are excellent students, and have been accepted into the Honors College. I tried to call undergrad admissions to clarify at 4:35 p.m., and nobody was availible to answer my call. Understandably, I started to become excited, as did my friend. Her father called her to congratulate, as he saw the email on their family account. Another friend recieved the email and started to frantically plan a trip to College Park. Upon receiving the retraction email, complete with, big, bold letters “RETRACTION,” we were sorely dissapointed and forced to eat our feelings at the local pizza joint. We all had the delight of telling our parents that the email was a glitch in the system and that we, indeed, were still waiting to hear from UMD whether or not they would grace us with any amount of money at all. In short, this ruined my day. The retraction email was even cold and dissmissive! I do not believe that UMD understands the emotional stuggles attached to financing a college education and took their mishap far too lightly. I am sorely dissapointed and hope (in vain) that some form of compensation will come. It would appear that, like the email, we are all simply “glitches” in the system to UMDCP.

Sorry you all had this experience. Not that it makes it any better, but other schools have actually sent false acceptance letters…

Computers are a double-edged sword…when they work, they make life soooo much easier. When they don’t or when there’s a glitch like this…they can make your life miserable.

A computer glitch – are you saying the computer sent out the emails on its own without human help??? I don’t think so.

It doesn’t take much to knock a school off a list and I am certain this does not help Maryland especially with students who had the stats to be invited but wasn’t. It is obvious Maryland is not showing these kids any love and at this point of the game, it can make a difference to these kids.

Bookworm95: I’m sure you have great options and wherever you end up, you will be fine :)

Yep, I got the email and then the soul-crushing “RETRACTION” email.

UMD is one of my top choices, but I’m counting on some serious financial aid from them to be able to justify attending there vs. UF to my dad. So this was doubly painful.

bookworm95 -

First off, ‘i’ before ‘e’ except after ‘c’!

“some form of compensation will come”

Are you serious? What do you want them to do? Give you a scholarship? Life isn’t fair and people make mistakes.

If your friend started to “frantically plan a trip” on an email that was quite obviously sent in error, well, that is just odd. Does your friend know about this site? They could have logged on here and saved themselves from being so frantic.

Are you really complaining that “RETRACTION” was in “big, bold letters”?!

“The retraction email was even cold and dissmissive!” How so?

rapunzel9894 - Why UMD over Florida? Aren’t they about the same tuition wise?

Greivis- I qualify for in-state tuition for Florida.

Oh. Well in that case, why UMD over UF?

I’ve lived in Florida for my entire life and UF is practically high school part 2 for my area. We’re only two hours away, so it’s almost as if everyone I know is just relocating there. I really don’t want to spend another 4 years with these people.

UMD and UF are comparable in most respects, but I like UMD’s proximity to DC.
