Banneker/Key letters

@3tallblonds - I totally understand where you are coming from, but from everything I have heard, if you want the big money, you should consider attendance mandatory (save extenuating circumstances).

If you personally cannot take off of work, you should consider sending your student(s) without you via public transportation. Parents are NOT integral to the process of consideration. Public transport into DC should be easy to find and then the trip from DC to College Park via metro is highly manageable for any teen. From the metro stop in College Park, there are university shuttle buses directly to campus.

Frozensoda are you instate or OOS?
@3tallblonds…6 hrs driving vs full-ride seems like a no brainer to me. Once again Maryversity is right let your kids go on their own. If I happen to get a letter I will have to fly from California on my own…part of college experience

Aaaaah yes, of course. We will go; planned on it. The logistics of the scholarship interviewing processes along with the hs musical in full swing and the girls’ show choir going to NYC at the same time and our youngest and her swimming… well you all know. Beggers can’t be choosers though. I know. Sorry if I sounded whiny.

@3tallblonds you’re child can still considered for the scholarship regardless if they can make it or not. When I went to RSVP it gives you the option to choose to that you will be attending on that date, to be contacts to schedule an alternate date, to still be considered even though you cannot make an on campus interview, or to just not be considered. So they take in account that not everyone can make it because of their busy lives. I don’t think their should be any worries if you can’t make it.

That makes no sense. They would not have an interview process if you did not have to interview for the scholarship.

“Once again Maryversity is right” - music to my ears and something my kids never say, ha ha.
Now, I must admit that what I am about to say may not be right… but it is what I think…given that you do not need to interview for Presidential and Dean’s merit scholarships, and the highest Presidential scholarship can be equivalent to a partial B/K, that is why there is the “option” of letting them know you cannot attend the interview day. So, if you don’t attend, you might be still eligible for a partial B/K. However, if you want the whole kit and kaboodle of the full B/K, I think that interviews are necessary…best of luck to all of you and congrats on all of the accomplishments that got your foot into this very prestigious door! :)

If you are invited, I’d recommend you make time to come.

Anyone get B/K packet yet in CA?

Nope…tigerdad5 did you get email?

Yup. Got email but no packet yet. Good luck to all!

I received an email telling me that I was not a semi-finalist for the B/K scholarship. Disappointed but also impressed by Honors College/Selection committee. The email that I received clearly demonstrated that they had read my essays and letter of recommendations. In a nutshell my standardized test scores were not high enough and this years applicant pool was very competitive. Hopefully I will receive the Presidents Scholarship and be a Terp next year.

@bigbooklover, did you inquire about whether you were a semi-finalist or not?

bbl, I think the email is a good sign for the Presidents Scholarship and remember the individual colleges have merit scholarships after freshman year. Good Luck

Yes and no. I have been in contact with them about other issues and they knew I was waiting to hear so I could figure out how to get to MD from CA.

We know someone whose testing was not super high and he received an invitation. As much as I hear this is stats driven, I am somewhat skeptical.

It is stats driven if you dont have a “hook”

Received my interview packet today!
My interview is March 3. So happy!

My son received an email on the 10th and a package in the mail today. The website offers interview and optional activities on Feb 25. The website offers the choice of being contacted about a different date but only for the interview. Does anyone know if the optional activities are also offered on March 3 or any other days?

@momwquestions: I’m pretty sure the kids are divided into equal groups for the two dates, so if they allow your son to switch to March 3, he could probably do the entire day just as he would have on Feb 25.

Thanks momtimesfour.
