Banneker/Key letters

@3tallblonds, here is something I posted last month that explains the different scholarship levels.

3 Scholarship Levels

Banneker/Key Scholarship: The University of Maryland seeks to identify and select some of the brightest high school seniors in the nation to continue their education as Banneker/Key Scholars. There are two award levels for Banneker Key Scholarships. The first award level covers the costs of tuition, mandatory fees, room and board, and a book allowance each year for four years. The second award level provides a partial scholarship to go towards tuition and a book allowance each year for four years. Scholarship recipients will also be admitted to the Honors College and will be afforded many other opportunities as they participate in intellectual enrichment programs. For full consideration, students must submit an admission application, application fee, official transcript, essay, recommendations, and official copies of SAT or ACT scores to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by November 1 for the following academic year. Selected semifinalists are given a personal interview by the Banneker/Key Selection committee. Factors such as a candidate’s involvement in community service, talents or skills, leadership, and character all play a part in the final awards.

President’s Scholarship: This award provides talented prospective freshmen with scholarship support for four years. Awards ranging from $2,000 to $12,000 per year are offered to incoming freshmen. Students are selected through the admissions process with primary consideration given to academic performance in high school (high school courses and achievement), results of standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), extracurricular activities, awards, honors, recommendations, and the essay. For full consideration, students must submit a complete application for admission by November 1.

Deans’ Scholarship: This award provides talented prospective freshmen with scholarship support for one to two years. Awards ranging from $1,500 for one year to $4,500 for two years are offered to incoming freshmen. To be considered, students must submit a complete application for admission by November 1.

For comparsisons sake, my daughter is in the Honors College and received the President’s Scholarship. Her stats were:
ACT 33 (1440-1480 SAT equivalent)
4.0 UW GPA/4.6 W GPA
Ranked 1/420
12 AP classes

She came in as a freshman with 35 credits.

She had many EC’s,was a varsity athlete, had hundreds of volunteers hours, and a part time job.

Thanks! Are you instate?

Yes, we are from Maryland

I received my invitation as a B/K scholar today in the mail

@MaserYster did you receive the email prior as well?

Yes I had received an email prior about an “special” package coming.

In researching prior threads, it appears B/K letters came out in “waves” in 2011, as opposed to all being sent on the same day. I did not notice similar comments about “waves” in 2012 or 2013. Does anyone know if it is possible additional B/K emails will be coming out beyond what was sent yesterday?

If you did not receive email I dont think you will be receiving the B/K

I’m still waiting on my letter. Perhaps it’s in another wave. It’s weird since I live 20 mins from CP haha

Did anyone OOS receive letter?

When are interviews?

My son received the packet today. The interviews are on February 25th in the afternoon but there are events through the day. We are very happy! We live in Maryland.

I received the email yesterday and got my packet today. I live in Maryland. But my interview date is March 3rd

Oh boy, well, I hope the interview dates are negotiable. Did it imply that? We live in NYS. No packet yet but wouldn’t expect one until at least tomorrow. So on campus interview? No chance for skype?

Also, if you get oppotunity to apply for B/K, is there some minimum scholarship you should expect or can you come away with $0?

In past posts it said everyone that interviews receives some level of merit aid. The catch is that you have to show for interview. .

3tallblonds, there was an option for “I can’t attend on this date but am still interested” I am not sure about Skype but it can’t hurt to ask.

thanks. Interested? sounds sort of odd, doesn’t it. Heck yes, I’m interested but I live 6 hours away and have a full time job and 3 kids and a dog.

Oh and a husband too. Can’t forget him!

I may not have the wording exactly right, but the basic idea was that you still want the scholarship, but can’t get there that day. There was a “no longer interested” type of choice, too.

I’d just like to say I never received an email from UMD, but I just received my B/K package today, addressed to me. So there’s still hope for you all who haven’t gotten an email!
