Um, read the invite (or this thread), science fiction. Congrats! You will at least get the $8k per year, with about $1K additional book money per year. According to astute math done on another thread, about 25% of the invitees get the full scholarship.

Ok. will someone please set this percentage discrepancy straight.
With regard to the rough percentage of students who get the full ride as opposed to the 8k, I've seen 60%, 50%, 25%, and "10-12 people". Can anyone give me a solid estimate.
Thanks bunches.

Hello astrophysicsmom

If you are refering to my post of [25%, it means that the Honors Program invitees have a 25% chance of getting the B/K scholarships, not 25% will get full scholarship. I am not sure what's the breakdown of full vs 8k.

Hello science fiction

When did you receive the letter (postmark)? I ask because according to this post B/K timeline](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/150789-banneker-key-scholarship-8.html?highlight=chances+Honors+Program#post1061814049), it comes in waves, but during last Thursday online UMD admission online chat, somebody ask if they have not received the B/K invitation, does that mean they are not being considered, and the answer was yes, that was it, no more mailing coming out. So, I don't know what to make of this discrepancy.

the letter of invitation came on Friday.

the schedule of the events/activities for that day leaves a very odd impression. Individual interview lasts only 20 minutes. The rest of the day is THEIR lecture on the program, campus tour, etc.

Seriously, the campus visit cannot be serving as a means for evaluating semifinalists for them to choose finalist, if 20 minute interviews are all they have scheduled for each candidate. So, I assume the real selection is still based on paper evaluation. This is different from other well known merit scholarship competition, where campus visit is a weekend long evaluation/selection bonanza with tests, group interviews, individual interviews, etc.

Of course, if you manage to succeed in presenting yourself as a potential ax murderer during a short 20 minute interview, that's another story.

Any one know if it is true that you need to "accept" the UMCP first and then the they will consider to give you the Department scholarship

If you are "undecided", then you won't get any department scholarship even though you are accepted to the engineering school.

Is that true?

For those traveling to the B/K interview from OOS; they are offering travel vouchers up to $500.00. This amount will be reimbursed to you within a 30 day time period. You will need to save your e-ticket with the amount etc. and present it at the visit.

I just spoke with a very nice man in the scholarship office. He confirmed that all the BK invites have indeed gone out. There will be no more. Unfortunately, my DD was not invited. He did tell me that she was in the pool that was reviewed but did not make the semi-finalist cut. He went on to say that she would now be in the first pool of applicants to be reviewed for the other scholarships. Of course, they don't add up to much, so that probably puts UMD out of the running for us. :-(

BTW for those interested. He stated that the cut the applicants down to the top 1000 to review for semi finalist, then they invite approx. 400 to interview.

I am starting to wonder if my son will get offered any merit aid at all. Bleah.

Hi "usafa2011dad"

Do you know what is the name of the man you have talked this morning? I would like to ask him other scholarship information..e.g. how many will get the President this year. Thanks

sorry on my mis-interpretation of the statistics, icylava, you're right. I'm an astrophysicsmom, not a mom who does astrophysics. I'll leave the higher math to the rest of you folks (and keep my fingers crossed for all) !!!!!

you just have to call admissions and ask to speak to someone about scholarships. Be prepared to be on hold FOREVER. I think I waited 31 mins before I was able to speak to a person, then was on hold for another 10 mins waiting to speak to someone regarding the actual scholarship. But at least now I know.

Jewels-Where did you get that information? And exactly how do you go about getting the voucher? Is it automatic or do you have to request it somehow?

Gina,

When we called to confirm the interview, we asked. The person in UA said that there was a travel voucher available and to bring in the proof of purchase for the ticket and they will reimburse up to $500.00. They also said that a phone interview is available should OOS prospective students be unable to attend the interview.

Gina,

Also, DS's actual invitation packet came in today and the last sheet in the folder has the travel voucher information. If you didn't get one it could be that your state is much closer than ours or is close enough to drive.

We're not right on top of it, but we can drive. We do have to pay for a hotel though.
I do understand not giving it to every semi-finalist from NY that's probably more money than they'd want to spend.

Jewel--I'm glad to hear that things seem to be working out better for your long-distance issues! YAY!

i was accepted to honors humanities and gemstone and have a 4.2 GPA and 2280 SAT but i havent recieved any notification so i guess that i'm not being considered for the scholarship...just wondering what are the usual stats of B/K semifinalists?

Thanks! DS is getting very excited about the visit. The invitation and packet were very impressive. He was excited to learn that he was in the top 2% of 27,000 applicants!!! We were blown away! We'll see how things work out.

alamode, with stats like yours, you will very likely be offered the $8K Presidential scholarship. Last year my son received his scholarship letter in mid-March. I believe it was dated March 12.

oregonianmom - what is your son's stat (WGPA, SAT...) if you still remember..Any outstanding EC?

thanks
