Banneker/Key Scholarship

on the admissions website?

I'll try to go to that chat tonight, thank you!

The email for Honors and Scholars chat indicated only two nights;tonight and one day in March. There is a link to register and to obtain or register a screen name in the email.

Is anyone aware if the university will be offering accomodations to the students from OOS? Those I have spoken to at the university are not aware of any overnight accomodations. DS will be traveling alone and cannot rent a hotel room at 17. I am hoping someone will contact him or me from the department for which he was accepted with information, but if anyone who has already received their snail mail invitation has information or anyone with firsthand information can help that would be great.

I just received my letter in the mail. Good to know the email wasn't a mistake.

Jewels-I'm not aware of anything like that, but I hope I'm not in the same boat. The information they sent doesn't say anything. There's just a list of hotels. Maybe there's a way to schedule an overnight visit the night before?

killthefifi....if you are absolutely sure that you don't want the scholarship (even if it's the full ride), you could notify them ahead of time, and skip the interview. (unfortunately you can't take it and give it to someone else). Every year, they offer full rides to lots of MD kids who end up going to an Ivy, or taking a big scholarship elsewhere. I'm sure they have this planned in their "yield" when they make the offers (who knows about this year's economic effect). However, if you KNOW you're not going to take it, you could "do the right thing (??!!!)" and tell them now.... just a thought.

astrophysicsmom,

A few days before decisions came out, I got a recruiting phone call from the chair of the undergraduate math program. I figured that he would be a good person to start with, so I contacted him. At the same time, my dad (who works at UMD) contacted someone he knew in the Honors program. Both inquiries went through a few people (CMPS recruiting director, etc.) until they ended up at the director of honors. He gave us the information related above and personally invited me to honors.

Gina,

It sounds like DS will be on his own for the night before. They do have an overnight program, but it is a specific date toward the end of March. I received word through a kind poster that there is a Marriott across the street. I also found several other options within a 10 to 15 minute walking distance. The cost is averaging about $75.00 plus taxes. We could fly him in and out the same day, but because of the time it will take him to get there, he would miss the breakfast/meeting and class observation. I think that would be important to him. We have an email in to the department he is majoring in, so maybe they will come up with a different option.

does anyone know when UMD will mail recipients of scholarships like the presidents award or the deans scholarship?

Mid-March, mouzia57.

Jewels-I'm not sure about this, but I'm pretty sure that a 17 year old can't fly on their own without someone meeting them at the other end. I'm not a hundred percent sure on that one though. And I've stayed at the Marriot across the street, it's very nice.
Emailing sounds like a good idea. You don't by any chance have family in the area?

Gina,

No, he can fly. He's been flying alone for some time. We have friends in the area, but I hate to bother them. It's the middle of the week and they are probably busy. I wonder if UMD is on Spring Break the week of March 11th. I'll see if I can find that out.

We did send an email to the department. Hopefully we'll hear something soon. He may actually have to stay two night depending on the time of his interview on the 11th. The last flight out is 3:00 something on all the airlines that fly our way. We have not received the snail mail invitation, just the email and it did not have the interview information other than the dates.

Anyone who has gotten the snail mail version, do you call to set up the interview and select the day that works best for you or are there designated times already listed? If there are times, what seems to be the latest time?

fyi..UMD's spring break week is the week of March 16th....

The date is listed. You can request to switch it, but is says space on other days is limited.

Jewels -- I know that some colleges have an understanding with certain hotels in their immediate area so that underage students visiting the college can pay for rooms. You might try asking UMD admissions if they have any such agreements.

Aster-Thanks.

I guess I need to wait for the snail mail. I already know that he cannot make either of the first two dates because of state decathlon and tickets in hand to travel to another campus. Hopefully the 11th will work out.

We did hear back from the department that sent him the invitation to the drop-in breakfast and meet and greet regarding an overnight stay at a dorm. She said it was up to admissions to handle that end and to wait until the snail mail arrived with the contact information.

S is accepted in Honors and Gemstone - Engineering. In-state and haven't heard a word about B/K and even if he does, there is a conflict with another scholarship finals he is participating in where he has already been awarded full-tuition. Oh well, guess we wait and see. BTW, I can't figure out what "DS" stands for unless it is generic for daughter-son. But the places where I see it used then go on to indicate the gender. So, what is "DS"?

DS - Dear Son

Here is the CC abbreviation thread

abbreviation

lost lawyer - what kind of scholarship your son has applied? Is it a "needed" base or "merit" based. What is his Stat?

thanks

a letter of invitation arrived for the on-campus interview for banneker scholarship selection as a semi-finalist.

So, how does on proceed to the finalist status: does being a finalist mean scholarship? Or, is there another huddle after becoming a finalist to become a recipient of the scholarship
