Oops, I completely missed that in the previous post. Sorry!

There are more applicants this year than previous years..more competitive.

Only 200- people get in the Gemstone. There are total 800 honor.
I have a friend who has better stat did not get into the Gemstone. It all depending upon how you answer the question in your application. ( if you like to work as a group...)

B/K is only selected from honor...I am not sure about the President/Dean

It also depending upon which school you try to apply. Engineering/Business are more competitive to be honor.

ok well Im really hope i get some form of scholarship money
what do you think my chances are for the deans or the presidents scholarship?
Ill be finding out in the next two weeks so im really nervous

and you're right the amount of applicants to UMD was really high this year and it was really competetive .

I am a gvpt major so idk if that is more competetive than other majors for honors.

im sure the number of applicants was higher this year but i still think more than 200 were accepted to gemstone... i think 200 is approximately the number that enroll, or maybe even just those who graduate... i think I know about 25 people accepted to gemstone and there is no way that I know 13% of the total who were selected for it..

of those 25, only 3 or 4 are actually considering the program.. and like 10 are likely to go to UMD at all

for those of you who would like to know:
exactly 384 (1.4%) applicants were given invitations
and over ONE HALF will receive the full tuition award

Where'd you get that information?

I'd also like to know where that info came from. Out of curiosity.

Can anyone who's been to the interview already say what it's like?
I've read the rest of the posts but I was wondering if anyone had anything else to add.

I'm new to this and may have missed it.

What are the chances of a CP Scholar getting merit scholarship money? And when would he/she know?

Our DS is scholars and received presidential merit money.

bulletandpima:
you seem to know everything about UMd (and I don't mean that sarcastically, you're a great source for info on the site), do you know about how many of the B/K invitees recieve the full scholarship?

I know alot because DS lovesit and Bullet is an alum, so UMD has been a huge part of our life for the past 20. As far as BK I believe if I am correct about 800 are invited and I believe it is @200 that get the full ride and the rest get the 8K...Will not swear by it.

Here is an FAQ for BK

just yesterday I got an invite to the march 11th interview..anddd i live in md. this seemsgoofy. maybe it was sent out after some people rejected the interview??
i mean, if thats the case its just stupid because im basically already below all the others who were interviewed and i dont have a shot at the full ride.
i hate college admissions. they like the mess with your head

Hi

This link will tell you a little bit more for Gemstone vs Honor
Apparently, approx. 200 will be in Gemstone out of the 800 honor students ( it does not say if it is "enrolled" or not )

Gemstone FAQ, Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland

-bulletandpima-
I think 800s are for the honor students. It will be approx. 400 ( less than top 2%) selected for the B/K interview and probably only 1/2 got the full ride. I think "tennismaw" 's number is probably correct.

Am I right in assuming that far more in-state students get the full-ride than out of state?

You know, I wonder about that 400 number being accurate. The itinerary that was included in the invitation indicates that interviews are from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m with only 20 minutes allowed for each interview. That would mean that they can only interview 3 applicants an hour or 12 per day. Since there are only 3 interview dates, that would mean that only 36 students would be interviewing for the B/K Scholarship.

So, I wonder if the actual number is much smaller than everyone believes or if there are several interviewers. Each applicant has a designated time, so I feel like there may only be one interview panel or interviewer. Either way, I feel like the 400 figure may be way too high.

If anyone has already interviewed, do you recall there being only one interviewer or were there several?

There are several teams of interviewers.

If you check the schedule, there's about ten people assigned to each time slot. So, if there are 12 time slots, times 10 people there are about 120 interviews a day give or take, giving you a total of 360, which is close to the 384 figure given earlier.

Okay, that makes sense. So it is a panel interview then?

oh wow, a panel! well since this is a scholar interview and we are already their top applicants, I dont think it will be bad! Do we seriously get ipods!!!!Thats a nice perk
