Banneker/Key Scholarship

We get iPods?! That would be wicked sweet.

Last year, we were told at the luncheon that the number of B/K invitees was 376, and about half would get the full ride. They run multiple interview panels all afternoon, mostly in Anne Arundel Hall. IIRC, S said there were two or three people who talked with him during the interview.

Some stats on B/K and other scholarship yields -- note that these stats are for in-state students only. Have not been able to find anything more current.

According to my interviewers, they very recently (like this past week) decided that the out of state partial scholarship is now 12K, and you are guaranteed at least that once you are invited to interview. The in-state is still 8k because that pretty much covers tuition anyway.

I'm new on this site - thanks for all the great information. Does anyone else have a phone interview scheduled? We live in Colorado and were on winter break (out of town) when invite arrived. Couldn't attend the date invited, but offered a 30 minute phone interview. Definitely excited about that!!! Not sure what the phone interview will be like -
any insights?

I've already been to my interview. I had already done several college interviews, 1 scholarship, and 1 med school interview before going to the day at Maryland, but for me the interview seemed relatively relaxed. On each day there are several interview time slots, campus and dorm tours, panel discussions, etc.

For the actual interview, it is a discussion between you and two other members of the selection committee. My interviewers were both part of the University Honors Program (one was the head of a department, the other an admissions officer). The interview was about 15 minutes and fairly informal - the only stressful part was that they alternated questions and so sometimes it seemed like they were coming from all sides. However, I was able to leave the interview feeling confident.

Hope that this helps!

So, I guess if my DS hasn't been invited for an interview by now, he won't get one..... darn!

Anyone know?!

For clarification,
all Banneker/Key recipients will receive either an ipod touch or iphone if they enroll. Gimmicky...

The full is looking reaaaally good considering it rises along with tuition/fee rises. The partial is capped.

We'll know by April 1st, probably before.

During the on-line chat last night, they said some of the award letters will be sent later this week.

I read that if a student receives a full ride B/K, they will be able to keep the Maryland Distinguished Scholar $ too - that's $3000/year. What about National Merit money? Is that set-off against the B/K or can that be used for winter sessions, etc.?

For those who may not look at the Parent's forums.... this one is REALLY worth a read:

It echoes what I've maintained about UMD...D1 (who is finishing her 2nd year at UMD) was an undergrad research assistant as a Freshman, has had an internship at NASA since last September, and will likely be published in a research article later this year, has officially finished everything she needs for her Undergrad citation in Honors, and is a walking public service announcement about how great UMD is. (She's also been the #1 recruiter of her sister!!!)

--marnimom, the National Money is taken out of your Banneker/Key.

But you do pocket the $1500/semester from the MD Distinguished Scholar award, plus the book stipend included in the B/K.

One thing they don't tell you up front about the B/K is that the room and board portion of the scholarship is taxable income--I end up owing about $1200 in taxes every year. Nothing is free :).

So it's official. No B/K for me. After all my work, I get a lousy Dean's scholarship aside. All bitterness aside, I still think UMD's an awesome school. It's just, UMBC's equally awesome in my book, plus they're giving me more financial aid, so it's off to Catonsville for me!

Hey astrophysicsmom that was a great article and you offer a lot of help. I was wondering what major is your duaghter in because I will probaly major in aerospace engineering and I will probaly be looking for an internship with NASA next year.

She's getting a double degree in Astronomy and Physics. (and a minor in German, just for fun!!!) There are several avenues in working for NASA when you are at UMD (and it seems like even the people working at NASA don't know all of them!!!). Keep awesome grades going and a good rapport with the profs(and dept advisors) who would potentially recommend you!

Hi everyone

I got $5000 president mail yesterday. Anyone got anything?
Anybody know if I need to accept/enroll MD in order to get the Department merit scholarship?

DS returned from his interview. He LOVED the campus, students and faculty! He was glad to have attended the breakfast the day of the interview in his department. He was able to meet the Dean and many professors. He was pleasantly surprised when one of the professors he had spoken to at breakfast turned out to be one of the interviewers! He felt that having met him and spoken to him for 45 minutes at breakfast gave the interviewer an opportunity to get to know him a little better than just the 20 minute interview. He said only three students attended the breakfast. There had to have been more science majors than that interviewing! It was a great opportunity! Perhaps some drove up that day and couldn't make it. He'll be checking the mail with high hopes for the next two weeks!!

Uh, so I guess I got a 12,000 Presidential scholarship as out-of-state, which, according to their website, is the same as what out-of-state semi-finalists for this that don't move on get, but I didn't get any information for that, which I assume meant that I wasn't accepted. Does anyone know why this would be?

I got presidents one for 5k yesterday, so i guess i got second best. oh well.

From my understanding, B/K is COMPLETELY SEPARATE from the Presidential Scholarships. I just came back from yesterday's B/K day and they said decisions won't be back until the first week of April. There's a chance that you can get the Presidential scholarship now and the B/K in three weeks. You would just have to turn down the Presidential or decrease the B/K award. So, there's still hope, guys! Good luck!
