my stupid donor accidently sent my money to berkeley..i got this email from berkeley telling me that it'll be credited to my account..and now they have to send it back to the donor and then the donor has to resend it, but this time to UCLA...so dumb..

i haven't received a confirmation.

ive googled bruindirect a few times and i cant find anything about checking online.

"blahblah press 2 to check the status of your bruin direct blahblah"

i called today and they haven't processed it yet- it takes 4-6 weeks apparently and i've only sent it in just 2 weeks ago. the office told me not to worry though- any refunds will in the form of a check sent to your mailing address if they haven't processed the bruindirect yet.

so what happens? If you pay now, when the fin. aid isn't disbursed, they pay that amount as a refund?

yes, as a refund check, but i have no idea when they distribute those. i would think it's faster w/ bruindirect, since they wouldn't have to process checks, which is the advantage of bruindirect, i guess.

the thing is if I pay the money now I have to pay by check because they only allow fee - aid to be paid by credit card....stupid UCLA

to veteran bruins,
are the stafford loans/scholarships disbursed directly to your checking account or does ucla automatically use it for tuition.

The loans and scholarships are a part of your finaid package, so at first the money will be disposited into your BAR account to pay any reg fees. If there is any money left over, that money will be directly deposited into your bank account (assuming you signed up for BruinDirect,) for you to do as you wish with such as pay housing fees.

does the fin aid office audit what you spend the fin aid for? say, private housing or food? or...a trip?

Nope.

10 char

so we have to pay registration fees by sep 20? for my fin. aid, ill be paying about 3k out of my pocket, so do does my financial aid pay for the fees or do i pay using a credit card for the sep 20th deadline?

How much did you guys receive in grants?

if we dont want to pay by credit card, we can just mail a check to pay for everything right?

0 dollars. they were kind enough however, to offer my 5,500 in unsub. stafford loans.

You mean your EFC is 3K? Then most likely you won't need to pay anything on BAR unless you didn't accept the loans. Either way, BAR should tell you how much you should pay after financial aid is applied.

I have an EFC of around 6k...

So when the Fin.Aid is disbursed on the 18th, is the payment automatic or do I have to go through the BAR page and figure it out?

Look into the account summary of BAR where it says "aid available to pay fees". If there is $ amount indicated, it means that the disbursements from finaid will pay for the fall quarter charges. If there is no finaid, they expect u to pay under the "maximum credit card payment allowed."

Anyway u can do the math yourself, just look into your Efan and add up all the amounts offered for fall qtr (e.g. self reported awards, grants, scholarship, loans (except for the work study), if the total amount is bigger than BAR charges, there is no need to pay, you might end up with some refund to ur bruin direct.

I hope I am right with this assessment. correct me if i am wrong.

I think you got it dead on, momca25!

ucapplicant05: I learn a lot from all the post here plus constant calling to various ucla offices help me get a clear picture how ursa, housing, bar, bruin direct, finaid, etc. works.

Did anyone get like $3k+ in grants?
My friend did...b@stard.
