Barbour/Newberry

Don’t see much info about these girls dorms. Chose it honestly as a way to avoid North campus, but thought would be nice to meet other girls, cute houses, intimate. Know it’s less restrictive than Martha Cook. However there is so little info about these two dorms wondering if going to feel isolated or missing out on crazy college dorm experience or too small. Anyone know anything about the experience/dorm conditions?

I can’t say much about the culture of the dorms, but they are obviously not isolated, not physically anyway. They are located right on State Street, very close to the South University intersection and not too far from Liberty, Washington and Main streets. Being relatively small (100 or so residents each), they tend to be quite cosy. They do not have their own dining facilities, so for residential dining, you would have to go to West or South quad.

I lived in Newberry a few years ago and loved it. The community there is great, the girls get together and go out together, come back and have a great time, the lounges are wonderful. It’s a beautiful building, inside and out. Barbour is great, too. I don’t think you will regret this, I lived in East Quad one year and Newberry the next and after Newberry would never want to live anywhere else. You cant beat the location either, right across the street from Angell hall and two buildings down from the union!

I was really disappointed to hear they closed Barbour’s dining hall. It was really nice. The girls there were so inclusive and friendly. I didn’t know anyone when I moved in and the girls wouldn’t let me eat alone, people I’d never met invited me to sit with them. Newberry/barbour was the highlight of my college experience by far.

Thx for your input! Couple other questions, I heard there’s an exercise room, do you know what it contained? Also was there a diverse mix of girls? I am planning on going Greek and would not want to be the only one in the dorm to do so.

Do you mean in CCRB or inside the dorm? CCRB is right behind the dorms in Hill area.

No, inside Newberry there is supposedly a small exercise room, so thought maybe @Emaheevul07 may know about it?

There is a very small exercise room inside Newberry. It had maybe one very old elliptical, Pilates mat, a balance board, maybe one or two other things 5 years ago, can’t speak to what it has now. When I went I never once saw it in use and I was almost always in the lounge next door, so if you can use what’s there you’ll have a great private place to work out. But you’ll need to go to CCRB for more comprehensive equipment, it isn’t much-- unless things have changed.

Also the mix of girls is very diverse and I am SURE many will rush. People have this idea the girls are all very conservative or something, but I did not find that to be the case at all. A lot of them just want to live on central, got placed as freshmen without choosing it, or lived as a frosh and realized it was great so they stayed. All kinds of girls live at Barbour/Newberry. When I went there were always big groups of girls all going out together.
