HI, recently i was entitled to Calgrant B and my tuition came out. i paid it off. i looked through this forum and said that Calgrant A also went through barc. but on my award forum i was switched to Calgrant A and my tuition asked me to pay 100 dollars more. *** is this?

i dont think cal grant A goes through barc. does it or does it not? if it does not, where does cal grant A go to????????

can i change back to B?

Both grants go to your BARC account. You may have to pay more because the University Grant decreased a bit because your Cal Grant is higher. That is why people recommended you to stay with Cal Grant B. When you have Cal Grant B, the school usually gives you a bigger UG grant to make up the difference and match your EFC. However, when you switch to Cal Grant A, your aid will be more than what your EFC requires, and therefore your University Grant will decrease. That is why we were saying that Cal Grant B gives you more, or just as much money, because the University Grant corresponds with your Cal Grant. I’m pretty sure that Cal Grant A is the more academic one, while Cal Grant B is given to only low-income students. Cal Grant A is only to be used for paying for tuition and school fees, while Cal Grant B is an “allowance” which you can use on other expenses and books. Your University Grant is also primarily for tuition and school fees. That’s why we recommended you staying with Cal Grant B, because the UG grant would have made up the difference (which is probably why it is decreased now, and why you have to apy more) and because it would have paid for your tuition to meet your EFC, and your Cal Grant B would have given you money that you could have spent on outside things, as well.

i just checked, and cal grant A does goto barc but since cal grant A is 7788 and B is 1570 or something, shouldnt my tuition be less given cal grant A is more. i calculated it and its approximately the same.

Sigh. No, because your University Grant would have decreased, which we’ve already told you. I’m sorry if I sound frustrated, but this is the umpteenth time you’ve asked if the Cal Grant A is disbursed through your BARC account.

How about you copy and paste your BARC information here? That way I can explain to you what the different grants are and such.

both cal grant a+ uc grant= 13007

cal grant b+ uc grant= 13007

Are these just your own calculations? That’s not what it says in your BARC account.

Cal Grant B is an advantage because it is issued to YOU (through your BARC) and you basically can use it for cash. That means you can use it for books, transportation, other expenses, etc. Your UC grant would have made up the difference. For example, let’s say you were got Cal Grant B and a UC grant of 10,000, bringing you to a total of 11,551. If you switched to Cal Grant A, your UC grant would decrease to $3763 (11551 - 7788). It might even decrease to a little more. The Cal Grant B works to your advantage because it forces UCSB to give you more money for tuition DIRECTLY. It’s beneficial because you are receiving the full amount of aid UCSB can offer you, as well as a Cal Grant which you can spend on other expenses OR tuition.

Furthermore, Cal Grant B later increases to give you tuition as well as expense assistance.

When you qualify for both Cal Grants, your school/the commission picks the best one for you. But think about it, the school would rather pay less money, and therefore Cal Grant A would be more beneficial to them… so why would they give you Cal Grant B unless you needed it more?

Unfortunately, I do not think you can switch Cal Grants after funds have been disbursed. I know that you will not be able to change it next year if you can’t switch this year.

From UCLA help thread:
"On my California Aid Report (CAR), it states that I am eligible for both Cal Grant A and B and to contact my school. Can I choose Cal Grant A?

We recommend that you choose Cal Grant B. The first year’s Cal Grant B award is for access costs only, expenses for transportation, supplies and books. Beginning with the second year of Cal Grant B benefits, you receive the access costs in addition to the tuition and fees. Over four years, you will receive more from Cal Grant B."

these arent’ my calculations. i added it up.

Well, in your BARC account you made it seem like they are not the same. That is what I’m asking.

But whatever.
