Just be ready with some of the obvious questions. Like classes you took in high school, your interests, some things you might want to try out once at Barnard. The interviews are pretty chill. Just do your best to not get too nervous. And make sure you have some questions prepared for your interviewer at the end. Like real questions, not something you can just look up on the website. Also, you don’t know if you’re going to be getting one of the admissions officers or a senior interviewer who obviously is a student. Just in case that matters to you
My interview was v relaxed. I brought a resume so that I didn’t have to stress about mentioning concrete accomplishments and could focus on being myself. I was asked my favorite and least favorite classes from last year, what I look forward to for senior year, what I like to read, and my ideal day. Good luck!! You’ll kill it
Im so nervous for december! I’m applying early decision and my test scores & grades are not very high. The essay questions are also very stressful and i have no idea where to start :(( anyone else?!
Thanks for the tip! Could you possibly share some of the questions that were asked? I’ve got the basics (why Barnard? why a women’s college? favorite book/books you’re currently reading etc., any questions, etc.) but were there any other notable q’s?
Thank you for your post and your honesty. When my D discovered Barnard it immediately rose to the top of her list - we toured the following weekend only to discover that open house was the following weekend and we couldn’t make it back. She also interviewed but unfortunately it conflicted with the info session so she missed that too. So basically hit 50% of the opportunities to express genuine interest. She did email admissions with some key questions and got a reply, and thanked them. Any other suggestions on or opportunities to expressi interest?
I had my interview a few weeks ago! It went so well, because (as cliche as it sounds) it truly was just a conversation. Interviewer (Barnard alum now working on her PhD at Columbia and working part time in admissions) and I shared a mutual interest in public radio and it was the perfect jumping off point for a really enjoyable time. Honestly, try not worry about your interview–the worst thing you can do is work yourself up and be nervous. I was sort of freaking out when I realized I forgot my resume on my printer, but it turned out that my interviewer said that she never likes to look at them during an interview because they distract from the person in front of her. We actually ended up going way over our allotted time and getting kicked out of the interview room by the next pair who needed it!
Hey everyone! I am SO, SO excited about applying to Barnard! I can only hope to meet all you wonderful women at Morningside Heights next fall
I have my alumni interview soon, and was wondering if anyone has any tips regarding the interview? I am so terrified about the interview so any kind of advice is welcome!
@filmstudent2021 Like I said above, it’s honestly a conversation. Don’t just fire off your ECs and accomplishments–your application will show that already. Give context and talk passionately about the things that you do (the type of anecdotal information that can’t be condensed into the 150-character common app descriptions). Good luck, you’ll do great!
did you guys send a mid term report? I asked my guidance counselor and she said it wasn’t necessary because the first semester just started. And the first term report too. I looked online on my portal and it says it’s missing
@daeneryssnow I think you’re fine! It’s not missing in the same way that the final report is not missing–they’re simple not available yet, and it’s different for every school. Common app is so vague and confusing, don’t sweat it!
@rougesneakers sneakers thanks for the tip! also, what sort of questions did the alumna ask ( besides the common ECs and interests)? do you think the alumna interview will differ from the on-campus interview drastically?
@filmstudent2021 I’m totally not sure as to the difference between on campus and off-campus interviews (although my alumna also works in the admissions office, so I imagine that it might have more of a sway–but again, just a hunch!). She asked the basic “Why Barnard?” stuff, which turned into a long conversation about my interests and internships and other topics. There were really no typical “interview-y” questions in my experience, so, again, I can’t really be of help!
@filmstudent2021 and @rougesneakers - are there 2 interviews - the preliminary on-campus one and a second alumna one? I didn’t realize that. How was the alumna interview initiated and scheduled?
Hey guys. super excited, mostly anxious though, about my ED application to Barnard. I wish everyone the best of luck and hope to see some of you on campus this upcoming August.
@betwixt Nope, just one interview. It varies with who you get (alumna, senior, or admissions rep) and if you can travel to campus or not.
@betwixt I’m an international student, so the only interview I’m eligible for is an alumna interview over Skype!
@filmstudent2021 I’m domestic and live only a few hours from campus, so I’m not familiar with the process. Sorry!
@filmstudent2021 I really wouldn’t worry about the interview, especially as an international student. I’ve known several students from Europe who were admitted in past years, and none had interviews.
@rougesneakers Call the admissions office and they can advise about interviews. If you are EA it is probably too late as they are also in the process of reviewing applications. But it cannot hurt to ask.
@exlibris97 I already did my interview on campus, but thank you for your advice!
Good luck! Wishing you the best!
