Barnard ED 2023 Decision Results

CONTINUED FROM LAST POST

Job/Work Experience:

Internship with State Representative Jessica Farrar
~For two weeks in the summer of 2017, interned in her district office. Answered emails and calls, read and archived mail, and researched information.

Volunteer/Community service:
Reference my extracurricular activities- just about all of them had a major volunteer and community service aspect to them
-I planned about 5 major community service projects that were statewide (in JSA and Jack and Jill) that raised almost $10,000 collectively and had multiple people who were able to participate and get volunteer hours from it.
-Had two statewide positions where my job was to create service projects on a state level.

Summer Activities:

Study Abroad Program in Spain
~In July of 2017, studied Spanish at the University of Malaga in Spain for two weeks through the program International Studies Abroad (ISA).

Barnard Young Women’s Leadership Institute
~For two weeks in June and July of 2018, I was able to take a leadership course at Barnard, where we studied under a professor and explored topics such as rape culture, intersectional feminism, and racism.
~Created a website called whatyourhealthclassmissed.com with 6 other peers.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Personal Statement (9/10)
~Spoke about my work in Jack and Jill, JSA, and March For Our Lives and connected them together under the theme of social justice. I spoke about my fear of being judged for being black and how that subconciously propelled me to advocate for others. I went in depth about my innate need for justice and how all my activities and passions in high school were united under that need. (mentioned how I planned the children’s crusade in AL and how MLK III attended, talked about planning a statewide letter writing, toiletry, book, and clothing drive for veterans, and helping to plan the Houston MFOL Rally and how i was able to help my peers send messages to their legislators about gun violence)

Why Barnard (8/10)
~Referenced a book that I had received when I was four and how it inspired me to be a leader, because it was the first positive example of a black girl that I had and I compared that inspiration to how I felt when I first stepped onto Barnard’s campus. I spoke about my unwavering drive for social justice and human rights and how Barnard would be the perfect place for me to change the world. At the end, I spoke about how I had visited 3 times, followed multiple students on instagram, and got daily emails from their newspaper, which helped me to feel like an integral part of the community. In the final sentence, I brought everything together and explained how i would promote their mission of equality and hopefully inspire someone the same way the girl in the book inspired me.

Conversation (9/10)
~My character was Mariska Hargitay, who is on Law and Order and has dedicated her life to ending sexual assault, child abuse, and victim blaming. I spoke about how her advocacy work for survivors inspired me to be also be an advocate for those who have been affected by sexual violence. I referenced my gold award and how I started a program to educated seniors at my school about consent and how I had helped to create a website called whatyourhealthclassmissed.com, which has information about sexuality, consent, sexual assault, and numerous reference contacts for people to get help. I ended my essay by saying how her advocacy and fearlessness to talk about controversial issues propelled me to apply to a school like Barnard, where issues like these would be given a platform.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1:(10/10- History teacher who has been my JSA advisor since 9th grade and awarded me with highest history award at the end of my junior year for my advocacy.)
Teacher Rec #2: (10/10- My English teacher from Junior Year and I am extremely close to her. She is one of my favorite teachers and I was one of her favorite students.)
Counselor Rec: (10/10- I have known her since 10th grade and I am very close to her. She and I really bonded because she also went to a women’s college and was so happy when I told her I wanted to go to one.)
Additional Rec: (10/10- Barnard Professor from YWLI. She and I bonded because we were both black women who absolutely love social justice and bringing to light controversial issues. I read the rec letter and she wrote how I was a perfect fit for the school, and referenced a paper I wrote in her class where she felt I went above and beyond the rest of her students. She was still about to give constructive criticism so that the rec letter wouldn’t seem insincere)
Interview: (10/10- It was a former student from my school who I was super close with and actually allowed me to room with her when I went to Barnard to interview. She was one of the first people who inspired me to apply to Barnard and we have an amazing relationship. This may have been a conflict of interest, but the interview went amazingly.)

Other:

For additional information, I spoke about my 11 year old brother who has autism and cannot speak. I spoke about the challenges of living with him and how I often take care of him. I explained how his disability helped me to grow and compelled me to advocate for others, who also don’t have a voice (figuratively).

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Human Rights
State (if domestic applicant): TX
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Competitive, Private School
Ethnicity: Black
Gender: Female, haha ofc
Income Bracket: >$500,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
URM, Barnard Pre-College, Professor Rec Letter, Interview, State, Autistic Brother

Strengths:
Extracurricular Activities, Interview, Rec Letters, Pre-College, Essay, Resume, Course Load
Weaknesses:
GPA, SAT
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I think that I pretty much showed that I pretty much eat, breathed, and lived Barnard’s mission and that my need for social justice is truly a part of who I am and that is reflected in everything that I have done in high school. I had an extreme demonstrated interest, because I stayed on campus three times, had close relationships with a few students, and followed every student and program on instagram, snap, and twitter. In addition, I aman URM, who is accustom to competitive and small environments like Barnard. Lastly, I had a fantastic interview, rec letters, and the pre-college program. Honestly, I truly believe the main reason I got in was God, my faith has helped me get through this process and I am so extremely blessed. He is the reason why I got into the school.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
-Pace University ($112,000 scholarship)
-The Kings College ($85,000 scholarship)
-I have to withdraw my EA app from Fordham

General Comments: I am literally still in shock from yesterday and I cannot believe that I got in. I am estatic and so immensely grateful. Honestly grades and scores do not matter as much as you may think that they do. Just show that you have a passion for something, work your butt off, and make an impact on the lives of others. I was so worried that I was not going to get in and I am so thankful for all of the support that I have gotten. Also, just a tip for essays. A lot of people are going to talk about advocacy, but the one thing that will make you stand out in the applicant pool is showing a deeper meaning, whether a fear or desire that you have, that helps to explain why you did the things that you did in HS. I spoke about my fear of being judged for being black and how that compelled me to use my experiences to try to prevent other people from experiencing other societal injustices. All in all, I wish the best of the luck to the future Barnard applicants. I cannot wait to meet this class #Barnard2023!!!

Accepted!!!

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.85 (My school calculates a 90-93 as 3.71 to give some perspective) I’ve gotten straight As throughout high school, most of them over a 95

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): No major awards, I’m in NHS and won the IB award for excellence that they give to a junior who is “the most IB” at my school (I think this means thoughtful, collaborative, inquisitive…)

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
–I only used 7 out of 10 of the spots on the common app because I thought that listing what was most important to me was better than listing everything
–Head of poetry department on national literary magazine for past 3 years

–National History Day Club Vice President, 11th grade

Job/Work Experience: didn’t list
Volunteer/Community service: included with extracurriculars
Summer Activities: CIEE, UPenn
Essays (rating 1-10, details):

  1. Common app: 10/10, I wrote about my family and how I used to be scared that people would judge me based on who my parents were and my journey from being in a hateful situation to overcoming it and treating others with the same respect that I want
  2. Why Barnard: 10/10, wrote about my love for Barnard’s community and how my other communities (IB class, magazine department members) have lead me to Barnard, I think it was a really good mix of info about myself and info about why I love Barnard
  3. Which woman: 10/10, I loved writing this essay. At first I had so much anxiety over picking the “right” woman: she had to match with my interests, couldn’t be overused and I needed to have something insanely interesting to talk about. My advice to future applicants: every woman is the right woman. Although they probably get a lot of essays talking about RBG or Clinton, it matters more what you want to talk to them about. I ended up writing about my desire to converse with Berte Morisot, a french impressionist. A museum near me was having an exhibit with her work and had entitled it “Berte Morisot: Woman Impressionist.” Although I am not an artist (way more into law/politics/philosophy), I would love to talk to Morisot about her opinion on the title of “woman” and if she felt like it celebrated or lessened the impact of her work.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1:10/10, From my history/philosophy teacher who has had me the past two years for three different classes.
Teacher Rec #2: 9/10, from my English teacher who I had in 10th grade and then again in 12th. He’s a great writer and knows that I’m a top student in the classroom but he doesn’t know me that well outside of class.
Counselor Rec: 8/10, she doesn’t know me that well but really believes in me
Additional Rec: 10/10, from my editor at the magazine I’m a part of, she’s known me for the past two years and has seen me develop as a leader
Interview: 9/10, I interviewed at Barnard over the summer and loved the chance to be able to talk to a recent grad, I clammed up a little at the “why do you want to go to a women’s college” question but I emailed her later to thank her for her time and was able to elaborate on my answer. I asked good questions!

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: Philosophy
State (if domestic applicant): PA
School Type: Large magnet, public
Ethnicity: white
Income Bracket: low-middle

Strengths: Grades, recs, essays, sustained commitment to my extracurriculars, passion for philosophy

Weaknesses: I was concerned that not taking 4 years of math/science would be a problem but I wrote a short explanation in the additional info section about how my school’s schedule would not allow me to take 4 years of math/science if I wanted to take philosophy. I was also concerned that math studies would be a problem but all of my other classes read as challenging. Lastly, I was told by a lot of people that if I wanted a shot at any selective school I would have to take SAT subject tests and do well. I hate the college board (they are a non-profit with 23 executives that make over 300,000 a year) and didn’t want to engage any more than I needed to in their capitalist venture. I was still concerened that not taking the subject tests would be a problem though.

Why you think you were accepted: Looking at some of the posts of other girls, I don’t know why I got in and they didn’t. Here’s my best understanding of my acceptance: I was qualified in every way and really showed that I loved Barnard and that it would be a great fit for me based on who I was before I started the college process. I’m also a very intellectually curious person and I know that Barnard puts a lot of value into a student’s desire to learn. This showed through in my recs and essays.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I applied ED so nowhere else

General Comments: My advice to future applicants is that you don’t need to have the highest SAT score or take 4 years of the most challenging math classes. There are other ways to make your application stand out! No matter if you get in or not, remember that you will be the same intelligent, passionate, beautiful woman and that a college admissions decision can never change that.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App - 10/10. I wrote about my volunteering experience at CHoP. I dealt with a lot of paperwork (including the informational pamphlets distributed to the patients), as well as shadowing doctors and actually interacting with patients for the first time. I talked to the Chief of the Department about making a more kid-friendly pamphlet for patients struggling with diabetes. I also wrote about the experience inspired my year-long research project into compliance in adults, and how I ultimately came away understanding the value of broad perspective when treating patients. The essay showed my initiative, compassion, ambition, and drive.
Supplement #1 - 9/10. The essay was thorough and specific to Barnard, although it probably lacked artistic flair in the writing style. I explained how Barnard was the perfect intersection for all my interests - amazing research in my fields of interest, opportunities to develop leadership skills, and a fantastically supportive environment.
Supplement #2 - 10/10. I think one of the best things about the this essay was that it highlighted some of the things I spoke about in the first supplement. I wrote about a Nobel Laureate in Biology who did research in genetics, but I focused more on her advocacy for helping women advance in the STEM fields, ending with a call to action for change in the double standard against women in STEM. I think it was a pretty powerful message, if a little cheesy.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10. My American Literature teacher in 10th grade and current Humanities teacher. She totally changed my life, and continues to blow my mind each day. One of my favorite teachers, and I think she likes me a lot. She’s a notoriously challenging teacher but I have always done very well in her classes and she loves my writing. She went to Smith and was the first one who inspired me to pursue women’s colleges.
Teacher Rec #2: 9/10. My AP Biology teacher last year. I don’t think we were very close, but I’m told he writes excellent letters, and I told him a lot about the research I’ve done. I definitely wasn’t his best student academically but I think he really liked me anyway because of my enthusiasm.
Counselor Rec: 10/10. We were quite close and she had seen a lot of my ups and downs over the past three and half years. She is very sweet and really believed in me, and her letter addressed some of the struggles that I had faced after challenging myself to skip a math class before high school when it was already not my strongest subject, as well as some medical issues that really impacted my GPA. She made a point to address the upward trend in my grades and my dedication to my studies, my research, etc.
Additional Rec: 10/10. I actually got to read this one! (shhhh) It was from one of the doctors I worked with at the hospital where I volunteered. She originally wrote it for my combined med school application but modified it for Barnard. She was very enthusiastic and even talked about the research I did this summer at Yale in some detail that I was unable to in my own application. She made it clear that I would not only be successful at Barnard, but also in my ambitions beyond college into my career.
Interview: 9/10. My interviewer was incredible and I think we really hit it off! I only rank it a little bit lower because I know I was incredibly nervous and it probably showed a bit. It was a great opportunity for me to talk about my interests outside of science, and I talked about my enthusiasm for politics that I was able to pursue through my Critical Issues class, which I hoped to take to further by working on a campaign before the midterm elections. Though my interviewer and I had different interests, I was able to engage in conversation about her interests and I think I made it clear that I knew what Barnard could give me and I was very much equipped to use those resources well.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: No.
Intended Major: Biology
State (if domestic applicant): CT
Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: Suburban Public (nationally ranked, very competitive)
Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)
Gender: F
Income Bracket: high
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation American (though my parents have been very successful here and that has clearly helped me, so I’m not sure how much that helped), multilingual and enthusiastic about pursuing a minor in Spanish to help me better communicate with patients in an increasingly multicultural world.

Reflection: Looking at my stats, there are a million and one reasons Barnard could have rejected me, but I think I was extremely clear about how much I loved the school. I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten in and honestly I still can’t believe it.

Strengths: My upward trend in grades, as well as consistency in my activities and essays to show that I loved science but was also a great fit for a liberal arts school.
Weaknesses: My SAT scores were pretty good, but my GPA was lacking. I didn’t have many extracurriculars or particularly spectacular awards.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was ultimately accepted because I showed very clearly and directly that I knew exactly what Barnard could do for me and what I would do with those resources for the world.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I’ve only heard back from one other school, but I got into UVM with a Presidential Scholarship.

General Comments:
To everyone who didn’t get in, I wish you the best of luck. I know you’re disappointed now, but wherever you end up, you are going to be so, SO happy and they will be very lucky to have you. ?

Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer weekly at my local Monastery 5+ Hours, GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth of America)
Summer Activities: Work with Refugees in Greece, Harvard Secondary School Program; Took Macroeconomics and Journalism
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 10, I had written about how I was challenged at Harvard and received a D- in Macroeconomics. I believed I was unstoppably and I used my non-profit as well as my mature lifestyle as an example of how I had thought I was unable to possibly fail and therefore learned my limits. A past Columbia Admissions officer read my essay and said it was strong.
Supplements
What Influenced you: 8, I wrote about how besides the obvious that Barnard was a strong academic college I fell in love with the quirky details such as my excitement at the open houses and student organizations, using inside jokes and spoke about how I had been a dependent of strong mothers and believed in the motto of Barnard.
Women in History: 9 I chose to speak about Amal Clooney and that I would love to interview her, I had given 3 extremely intelligent and well thought out questions.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 9, Science Teacher, she saw my highs and lows because it was in a science class and I am not gifted in that subject, she had seen me struggle to get a good grade as well as seen me help others. We are also very close and are part of the same friend group. But, she is a newly graduated teacher who had no idea how to work the Common App.
Teacher Rec #2: 7, History Teacher, he has a good opinion about me due to my outspoken thoughts and interests as well as my ability to debate. He isn’t really the person to go in depth about a person.
Counselor Rec: (?) My class size was 700 kids, she told me to write info on a paper and then she’d write it based off of that.
Additional Rec: 1) 10, written by a Barnard Alum, she is a nun at the monastery I volunteer at, she knows my family and I extremely well and wanted Barnard for me the most. 2) 9, written by close family friend, known me since I was little, spoke about my desire for a higher education since I was young.
Interview: 7, I had a senior interview me, it was quick, I answered several questions with 1 answer, she found me intriguing.

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Political Science, Art History
State (if domestic applicant): Florida
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Hispanic, Puerto Rican, and White, Greek
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: <100K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First Generation, Single Parent household, Hispanic

Reflection:
I don’t and will never understand why I wasn’t accepted, Barnard and Columbia Alum had thought I was destined and perfect to attend, I had thought that my essays were different and quite interesting (Willing to send if anyone is interested). I have held leadership positions as well as been involved in extracurriculars for more than a decade.Of course I understand my SAT score was bad but I was told from admission officers from Barnard that they expect low SAT scores from people who are Latina, First Gen, Single parent households (Which I am).

Strengths: Essays were superb, as well as Recommendations and Activities, I had started my own non-profit and raised thousands of dollars and worked one-on-one with refugee children, I’ve worked all my life as well, had a strong woman persona as well as holding a strong conversation with interviewer
Weaknesses: SAT (Obv) and GPA isn’t the highest
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I guess because my SAT wasn’t good enough? No national awards either
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: N/A

General Comments:
Congrats to anyone who has been accepted or deferred, you truly are quite rare. I am still disappointed I didn’t;t get in even thought I know perhaps this wasn’t the plan I was destined for and that’s OK. Sometimes people aren’t meant to go towards a path that isn’t right.

ACCEPTED!

I’m just gonna share my stats and reflection

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): n/a
ACT (breakdown): not sure which one they used since both composites were a 31 (July: 33 english, 33 science, 32 reading, 27 math) (October: 35 english 35 reading 31 math 23 science)
SAT II subject tests: didn’t submit any since they said they didn’t care
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.85
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): we don’t use percentiles or ranks
AP (place score in parenthesis):didn’t submit

Reflection: I honestly don’t think the stats matter as much as your extra-curriculars and demonstrating a passion for something. I’ve been doing all of my extra-curriculars for a long time and currently hold high leadership roles in all of them, including as the president of a state wide organization with about 2000 members. I also am super involved in my community and serve on a council for my city’s mayor. I interned in a government office twice, once during the school year with a city councilor and once for eight weeks in the summer in a state office. I think that what really matters for Barnard isn’t what you have on paper for stats, but what you’ve done outside the classroom. Are you passionate? Have you been doing it for a long time? That’s all I’m going to share, good luck to everyone applying in the future! Congrats to everyone who was admitted to the class of 2023, super excited for all of us  and to those who were rejected/deferred, don’t give up hope. You’ll find your place. I’m rooting for you. You all sound like amazing people and if Barnard couldn’t see it, that’s okay. Best of luck!!!

Reflection:

Strengths: Essays! I think I really proved my values and my identity through these. Also my letters of recommendation.
Weaknesses: GPA and SAT. I had a drastic incline of grades from my freshman to junior year, but my GPA is still low.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I showed not only how Barnard would help me grow as a learner, but also how a strong sense of self could guide me through school and the world.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: University of Illinois

General Comments: There are more ways to prove intellectual curiosity than you might think! Even if you don’t have a perfect GPA or SAT score, being 100% yourself in your writing, and show your passion for what you do can make your application stand out. Good luck to all applicants for this year and next year! I wish you all the best and whatever acceptances, rejections or deferrals you receive, a college admissions board does not change the fact you are intelligent, curious, amazing, and beautiful <3

Accepted!!

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Common App: 8/10: I’m a very critical person of my own writing, I’m planning on majoring in English. I personally felt it wasn’t the most quality piece I’ve done, but it highlighted my traumatic childhood and overcoming some really difficult situations. It was more triumphant than my typical piece, which I think helped me even if my actual writing wasn’t the best.

One Woman: 9/10: I wrote about my mom, and it is one of the pieces of writing I am most proud of. Again, sentence structure was a little iffy, but that’s the English Major coming out! I wrote about someone most people wouldn’t: their own mother, and I think that my topic was original and also touched on the feminist lens they want a girl looking through who is going to their school.

Why Barnard: 10/10: It was overall, I think, one of my better essays. I spent a lot of time writing and worked really really hard. I liked my style for this piece and think the fact that I talked about my IB Program being all women really helped me as well.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

10/10 for all of them: My teachers really know me, which is a strength. I just have a good tie with the people who wrote them, and I know they would only have good things to say about me (I don’t mean to be rude, I’ve just become friends with my teachers rather than just their students, which goes a long way).

Counselor Rec: Not sure, honestly. I didn’t get to read it but I’m sure she had something nice to say.
Additional Rec: 10/10: My IB Coordinator/ToK teacher wrote it and we all know he writes really good personalized essays. There are only eight of us in my senior class at my school, so he could concentrate and do them well.

Interview: 9/10: My interviewer said “If you enroll here, which I hope you do” which I thought was a good sign. However, I did stumble on my words a bit, and it didn’t feel super organic the whole time. However, we had a good conversation and it wasn’t entirely forced.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: English
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Multi-Racial (White, Latino, Carribean)
Gender: F
Income Bracket:>100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My childhood, which I talked about in my essay. I talked about being assaulted and living in poverty as a kid, which I’m sure grabbed their attention because I was able to maintain a 4.0 weighted gpa and also be in the hardest program for students in the world. IB was also a MAJOR hook; would not have been accepted otherwise I am sure.

Reflection: My scores were a little lower than I would think they wanted, but they accepted me! I think what truly stood out was everything else. As I write this, I’m kind of realizing now why I was accepted, which I couldn’t see before. What they’re looking for is someone active in their community and working hard, on top of good grades. You can have a 35 ACT and a 4.5 GPA but if they don’t see all the rest, it won’t cut it for Barnard, it seems, as I’ve been talking to accepted students. I had some of the lower scores, and I was still accepted because the rest of it was really good.

Strengths: Overcoming adversity, IB, Rec Letters, Essays, Extracurriculars, Leadership Positions, Volunteer Hours, Honor Societies, Staying in one club throughout HS and being dedicated, outside awards, IB IS SO IMPORTANT

Weaknesses: Test scores, GPA, (Some of my grades weren’t the highest)

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Subjective’s, having come from a difficult background helped me
Also, I did IB and have been working my butt off. While it definitely gave me a leg up in the admissions process, I definitely earned that leg-up with all of the work I’ve been struggling through.

Congrats to admitted students, and I’m sure that if you were rejected, you will still find your home! Good luck to deferred students!

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Fordham, haven’t applied anywhere else

Sorry, I am so late!!!

Accepted

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 1520
ACT (breakdown): N/A
SAT II subject tests: Didn’t send
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Not too sure because I’m not from US, but it is 93/100
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School does not rank
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Lang 5, AP Stats 4, AP US History 4, AP Seminar 4
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Honor and some school awards

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Leader of an international event at my school, service trip abroad, varsity tennis singles player

Volunteer/Community service: hospital volunteer, afterschool program volunteer (leader), local canvass volunteer (leader and raised money)

Summer Activities: went to a summer camp in the US, assisted a professor with research papers and summaries

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I would give all my essays a 9 because even though I absolutely loved all three that I wrote, they could still keep getting improved based on the personal preferences of the people who read them as well as on how my opinions change.

Common App: Mine was not super emotional, but it really showed my passion for psychology and how I changed after an unexpected occurrence. I really tried to show who I was, how much and why I was impacted, and how I decided to make change

Supplement 1: Wrote about a Barnard professor that really helped with research I was conducting in school. Also about how I visited Barnard in the summer and fell in love with the location, campus, and the community.

Supplement 2: Wrote about how I admired the peaceful and calming approach of a female leader and how she impacts those around her.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
English teacher: (9/10) because our class was only around 10 people so she knew each and every one of us really well. She was a busy teacher but she knew about my passions and about who I was.

Math teacher: (7.5/10). He is an amazing teacher and is very inspirational to all the students. I am sure that his reference is great, but my bond with him was not as close as compared to with my English teacher or my counselor so it may have been less personal.

School counselor: (9.5/10). My bond with her was pretty strong and she was the one that encouraged me throughout my whole application journey.

Interview: N/A

Reflection:

Strengths: SAT score, essays, recommendations (though no one can say for sure haha)

Weaknesses: awards, extracurriculars, no subject tests

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: probably because I showed that I am a Barnard woman who is passionate about my learning and helping my society. My essays may also have helped a lot.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: this was my ED so I don’t know haha

General Comments: No matter what the results were, I’m sure everyone will end up at a school that suits them well and will make them happy  Be sure to always be blatant in telling a school why you want to go to that specific school opposed to all the other options! Show your passions!

Strengths: I guess my SAT score wasn’t bad, I showed a lot of interest like I emailed my admissions counselor with questions alot
Weaknesses: I felt like there really wasn’t anything outstanding like an internship with a Senator or something
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think it has to do with the love for learning I displayed through my application. I took so many different classes and joined many clubs BUT I made sure to connect all of them in my essays through my love for academic exploration
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Clark University( accepted), UChicago (deferred)

General Comments: KEEP FAITH GIRLS. Barnard is not just looking at grades, but also the content of your character. Good luck to all those waiting for acceptances.
