Essays (rating 1-10, details): I know this is going to be annoying but I started my essays junior year - I revised and revised and threw so many drafts out. I got Barnard students to look at them, teachers, anonymous users, etc. So, I’d like to think they were 8-9/10! I still consider them some of my best pieces of work.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: AP Lang (7)
Teacher Rec #2: Comp Sci (7)
Counselor Rec: 8

Interview: It was really nice! Kind interviewer and I emailed her afterward.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Undecided
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
School Type: Public (Top 10 HS)
Ethnicity: Asain (Indian)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Idk if this counts but my low grades were partially because I suffered from Bulimia Nervosa.

Strengths: Essays, extracurriculars, leadership positions, SAT (maybe??)
Weaknesses: GPA (by a bit tooo much)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’ve always held a high view of Barnard’s process but I really feel like the only significant reason I was rejected was my GPA. That sucks and I had hoped my SAT would make up for it. I was in love with this school for 4 years and that sadly didn’t get me anywhere. I am an optimist but I would say with the rates lowering so quickly, if you have a significantly low GPA you have basically no chance so don’t get your hopes up. But of course, a chance is a chance, so don’t be afraid to apply. Best of luck to future applicants.

Decision: Accepted - ED

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 630 Math, 730 Reading/Writing, 1360 composite
ACT (breakdown): Didn’t take
SAT II: Didn’t take

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Academic honor role, National Honors Society, passed Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music piano exam with merit, went to Japan on the Japan-America Friendship Scholarship, various school-specific awards

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Classically trained piano student, member of high school’s rock band, ambassador for high school, apprentice in semi-professional dance company
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at a local church to serve food for homeless community
Summer Activities: Went to Japanese Concordia Language Village, summer 2016; went to Japan as a student through Youth for Understanding, summer 2017
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common app essay: 10/10. I absolutely poured my soul into this. I talked about my perspective on life while growing up and how it evolved and was impacted by my experience as an exchange student in rural Japan.
Why Barnard essay: 7/10. I was the most hypercritical of this essay because it was the hardest to write. It certainly was from the heart and expressed a true desire to attend Barnard, but I didn’t really include specific aspects of the school besides the fact that it’s an all-women’s college and in NYC.
Woman essay: 9/10. I talked about Beatrix Potter. Everyone I mentioned this to said it was a creative and memorable choice. I had always really loved the Tale of Peter Rabbit and her other books when I was a kid and her personal story of being a successful female author in the male-dominated world of early 20th-century publishing was very inspiring to me.
Community essay: 10/10. Discussed my experience volunteering at a church serving breakfast for the homeless community. Was able to tie it in to how I want to help the greater community of NY during my time at Barnard.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
I’m assuming they were 10/10. The first was my former math teacher and also the club leader for the rock band at school that I’m a part of, so he knows me well. Math was never my strongest subject, so I would constantly come and see him to ask for additional help and we would work together until I understood. I think it showed my academic persistence and resilience. The second was from my French teacher, who also knew me very well and truly saw my passion for language, which is what I want to pursue.

Teacher Rec #1: Precalculus teacher and rock band leader, 10/10
Teacher Rec #2: French teacher, 10/10
Counselor Rec: Probably good? She really didn’t know me that well but knew I was polite and had a good transcript, so…
Additional Rec: None
Interview: Went so well! I vibed so well with my interviewer and I could tell she thought I was a Barnard woman.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Russian Regional Studies with a concentration in Linguistics
State (if domestic applicant): WA
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: Parochial
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >$150,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nothing specifically? Maybe just my particular focus on language and international studies.

Reflection: Still super, super in shock that I got in. I feel very inadequate to be studying at Columbia, but I’m extremely proud that I have busted my ass for 4 years in high school to get here.
Strengths: GPA, writing ability (essays), demonstrated interest (I visited campus, met with an admissions officer at school, and had an interview.)
Weaknesses: SAT score
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I just conveyed that I really am the type of woman to study at Barnard— I love women’s empowerment, NYC, rigorous classes, etc.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Since Barnard was my ED school, I didn’t get the chance to apply to very many other places. But I got accepted by Salem College and Univeristy of San Francisco.

General Comments: I found these kinds of posts very helpful when I was applying! Good luck to everyone!

Common app - pretty solid apparently, my counselor said it was her favorite this year because it was pretty unique… I just made sure to really let my self-deprecating humor show sooo 10/10?
Why barnard? - contrasted why barnard was unique compared to other schools and included how i found out about them bc of a commencement speech speaker 9/10
Woman? - I talked about Shirley Chisholm and her fearlessness and how I’d want to learn to be like her someday. I asked her how her background influenced her fearlessness 10/10
Community? - I talked about how I would strive to make the people around me and in the community at barnard happy like I do at home 10/10

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: My teacher for AP world, APUSH, and now economics. He told me that he bases his recs on specific anecdotes and my counselor said it was great sooo 10/10
Teacher Rec #2: My pre-calc honors and now AP calc teacher. At the time I asked her to write the rec I was actually doing really well in ap calc hahah so she was very enthusiastic to write it… 9/10
Counselor Rec: I’ve had her since freshman year, but we got super close this year 9/10
Additional Rec: This was from the ambassador of Kosovo here in Panama. I was lucky enough to have worked directly with her during my internship so we bonded quite a bit! I actually got to read this one (sshhhh) and it was awesome! I cried a bit… 10/10
Interview: She laughed at my jokes (woooo) and seemed super interested in my life here in panama and I got to ask her about what she does and all of that so yeah that was sooo nice I loved it!!
(btw @ future applicants make sure you have a specific class and extracurricular you’d like to do at barnard, it helps a lot trust me)

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: Political science or history
State (if domestic applicant): I was born in Florida? don’t think that counts tho
Country (if international applicant): Panama
School Type: private and really small
Ethnicity: hispanic, (white??)
Gender: female
Income Bracket: <$30k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): 3rd culture kid I guess (born in the US, with venezuelan blood but I live in panama)

Reflection:

Strengths: essays, grades, and recs by far. I also think the interview helped a lot to show how much I love and care about Barnard. I really emphasized how much I valued the type of education and just overall knowledge and support they provided!
Weaknesses: standardized tests
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I guess I really fit with the persona of a barnard girl, with my seriousness in wanting to learn and all that but still willingness to have fun and help others
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: UVA, IU bloomington, and UF. For now I only know that I got into IU!

General Comments: please note that my high school experience is very different as an ‘international’ student and barnard, or any school in general, usually takes that into consideration when reviewing intl. apps! Good luck to future applicants, I hope this helps someone, and please feel free to pm me if you have any questions!!

Common App: 8/10, wrote about my experience with the war in my country and as an international student who then had to cope with people who supported the other side of that war.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 8/10 My History teacher - we had 4 people in our class, and he also supported me with a lot of difficulties in terms of MUN and LGBT clubs.

Counselor Rec: 9/10 - I was extremely close with her, she knew everything about the educational aspects of my life as well as what I did for others in school. She said she also mentioned activities which I did not, such as my 2-year culinary school course I am completing to become a trained chef.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Due to my background, I am able to provide a unique perspective than most, but I still provide an incredible amount of passion and drive for my community no matter what it is I am doing and I think that definitely reflects throughout my application.

Decision: Accepted RD

Summer Activities: Community Service and SCIENCE RESEARCH (the key component to my application)
Essays: I was very proud of each of my essays. I would honestly rate each of them a solid 10. My essays played a HUGE role in my admission. It is through my essays that I demonstrated my immense passion for science research, willingness to defy the status quo, and dedication to serving my community. Something I reccomend is to emphasize, in spite of your major, that you LOVE the humanities/liberal arts. Barnard has FOUNDATIONS, a curriculum of required humanities courses. Prove your interest in these courses! If you want copies of my essays, message me. I will be more than happy to share them with aspiring Barnard women
Recommendations: I sent in four of them. The ones from my science research advisor and the one from my English teacher I was told were really really excellent. My passion for writing as well as science are two things I wanted Barnard to know about me.

Applied for Financial Aid? No
Intended Major: Biological Sciences
State: New York
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female, duh
Income Bracket: Upper middle-class
Hooks: None

Strengths: Essays, grades/test scores, leadership, PASSION
As I said earlier, the passion and drive I expressed in my essays did not go unrecognized. Barnard is not a school that bases admission on numbers. It wants a community of women who will create change and have a drive to make the world a better place. Additionally, I went all out to pursue my research goals and even pushed for, and eventually received, a research grant from my school. Additionally, my application had consistency. It was very science-based, and not too jumbled and scattered.
Other Acceptances/ Deferrals/ Rejections:

Those are the only places I applied to. Good luck girls
