I also so needed finaid and got rejected and I feel like my stats were pretty good as well as extracurriculars
Rejected. I also needed nearly a full ride to attend, so at least I can blame it on that! Sounds like Barnard may just have not had much money left to give out to transfers this time. Good luck to everyone in your future college endeavors!
Wait how do you know what your temporary pin is???
does anyone know anything about the transfer waitlist?
Accepted! They said that I need to submit a $400 deposit by May 15, but I still haven’t heard from other schools… does anyone know if that deposit is a confirmation of enrollment at Barnard? Or if there is any way to extend the May 15 deadline? I’m stressed
Accepted and deposited!! I swear I cried and couldn’t believe. Good luck everyone!
ACCEPTEDD!!!
congrats! Did you apply for Finaid or css?
Rejected also. Needed tonssss of financial aid lol so unsurprised but still disappointed.
@pikacheesy no financial aid
I didn’t apply for aid either^ but I do think it’s not just about aid. I am sure they give out some financial aid to transfers.
@ahhhhhomg – if you still haven’t heard from the other schools in a week (May 10th) – then you could contact Barnard admissions to request an extension.
Just so everyone knows, it’s completely illegal for colleges to reject you based off aid. Although they are “need-aware” it does not give them the right to reject based off your need. It just means they are allowed to be aware of the fact you will need money.
I also needed a full ride in order to attend Barnard and this is not the first school to have denied me for financial reasons. I want to call Barnard and talk to them about why so many girls who needed finaid were rejected. I know it seems crazy, but it’s wrong that so many talented applicants were flushed out.
FWIW, I needed aid and got in. I got rejected at another school for aid though and I can’t complain… it’s all part of the game. One full paying student can fund the scholarships for other students of need, and they have to weigh their options that way.
Did they tell you that they rejected you because of aid? I wouldn’t necessarily jump to that conclusion. Honestly, all these selective schools are a complete crapshoot and they might see “fit” in some students and less in others. It’s all so arbitrary. I hope you guys all end up at an institution where you’re happy
This is simply not true at all.
There is NO law at all requiring colleges to be “need-blind” and many are need-aware or need-sensitive in admissions and certainly any private college is free to set admission policies that favor students who can afford to pay tuition. So yes, they can reject.
Barnard happens to be need-blind for regular admissions for entering students. However, it is not need-blind for transfer admissions — they do commit to meeting full need for fall transfers… but they will consider need and their financial aid budget in deciding who to accept.
Because they promise to meet full need – they have made the decision to be need-aware for transfers so that they don’t take in more students than they can afford to fund.
I am sorry that you are disappointed to have been denied by Barnard – and of course there is no way of knowing whether Barnard would have accepted you if you had not needed aid – but the bottom line is that Barnard is not willing to pay for you to attend as a transfer.
And yes, some transfer students who are financially needy to get accepted and funded-- but they probably do need to have stronger credentials. If you need a full ride then you are asking for Barnard to give you around $70K of grant money…and Barnard has every right to be choosy about how to distribute its very limited financial aid resources.
@calmom omg are you sure? Did you ask someone at admissions/do you know how long the extension is? Thanks!!
@calmom While I understand the point you are trying to make, it is illegal to reject people because of aid. I did not say that they legally had to be need blind. They are allowed to be need-aware. Yes, I understand that they must be choosy. Even so, this is not legally allowed to sway their decision. My sister is a lawyer and she has spoken to me about this countless times because my EFC is 0. The University of Texas is currently going under a law suit because of this law.
Does anyone know how many students who got waitlisted can finally get in?
@ahhhhhomg - I have no way of knowing whether Barnard will grant you an extension or not. I am just telling you the appropriate process to follow. You have to ask.
