Hi everyone! I can only seem to find a Barnard Transfer Spring 2020 thread, so I thought I’d make this one, for all of us trying to apply for Fall 2020!
Hey! I’m also applying to transfer in the fall as well! I’m glad we’ve got this thread started and hopefully more people will join in soon.
Hello! Glad to have found this. Thinking of transferring in the fall as well.
Super glad I found this thread. Currently almost done with my CommonApp application for Barnard and it is so nerve raking already. I’m glad to meet people in the same boat. I know decisions come out mid-May. Does anyone know of a specific date?
I was a transfer student to Barnard a couple years ago and received my acceptance in early May. Good luck with your applications, everyone! Let me know if you have any questions.
@baileywalters18 I think last year they started accepting around the last week of April and the first week of May. My best guess is they’ll let us know an exact date sometime in April
Hello! I’ve been anxiously looking for a Barnard transfer community since summer, lol. Super excited to apply!
@vinylraincoat does high school transcript really matter when transferring as a college freshman?
@leecheeen I can’t really give you an answer because I am not on the admissions committee, but I assume your high school transcript would matter more if you are transferring in as a sophomore than if you were transferring in as a junior. I only say this because as a junior, you have had more time to prove your success in college. What I CAN tell you is that I transferred to Barnard as a junior with a 3.3 high school GPA, but with a 4.0 college GPA, so I think it is safe to say that my high school transcript did not matter to the admissions committee.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
@vinylraincoat I’m having a similar situation as you before, but I’m wondering is SAT/ACT matter if transferring as junior?
@transferr2020 It is my understanding that standardized test scores are used to gauge how successful a student will be academically in college. If you have received a high GPA these past two years in college, then I can’t imagine that an average/mediocre standardized test score will hurt your chances. I took the old SAT and got a 1750/2400, which is very low for Barnard, but I had a 4.0 GPA in college and was accepted. But again, I am not an admissions counselor, so I can’t say for sure! I can only speak from my experience.
Hey girlies! I’m applying as a transfer too! Barnard was my first choice when I applied in HS but I didn’t get in. Applied ED and everything. Hopefully this year crosses fingers.
@vinylraincoat hi! I want to PM you but it’s not letting me for some reason, could you send me a message? thank you so much!
@vinylraincoat Do you know much about studying abroad? If I got in I would be an incoming Junior, I read that you have to spend four full semesters on campus so I’m assuming that means that studying abroad for a semester is out of the question?
@fcampbell You can still study abroad, although it might be hard to complete all your major/Foundations requirements in two years if you do so. The four semesters in residence is a rule, but studying abroad on a Columbia program counts as an in-residence semester. Study abroads with any other school/program will count as transfer credit, so you would not be able to do it. Simply put, you CAN study abroad, but only if it is on a Columbia program (such as their one in France, etc.).
Hi! I am also applying for transfer to Barnard for the fall! I’m a little anxious cause my test scores are low for Barnard but fingers crossed! Thanks for making the thread
Hello. I am applying as a transfer student and I believe my application is competitive (stats, story, grades etc.) However I know Barnard transfer is need aware. My EFC is pretty low (<10,000) so I am wondering if anyone can speak on how much that will hurt my application. Basically, I think if admissions were need-blind I would have a strong chance of being admitted. This is super upsetting as Barnard is my top and I have worked super hard on my application but if FA is out of my control.
@vinylraincoat What is the transfer community at Barnard like? Is or was your social group more made up of mostly other transfer students or was it a more equal mix? How does the school integrate transfers? Sorry, if these questions were really random.
@brightplaces I think transfer students are integrated pretty well. At this point, the only thing that reminds me that I am a transfer student is that I still have general education requirements left to fulfill as a senior. If you are looking for a “transfer community,” then I suggest you live in Elliott Hall if admitted. Most transfers are housed in that dorm. The school puts on transfer-only events, but unfortunately, they are not well attended.
Your orientation group will be only transfer students, but your orientation activities will be with both transfers and first-years. I tended to gravitate more towards the first-year students, so my social group is mainly comprised of those students, but it just depends on the person. Students in my transfer class are friends with their fellow transfer students, as well as random other students they met in class/clubs.
Let me know if I can help with anything else!
@vinylraincoat IDK if you can answer this but would you happen to know how much financials play into admission? My EFC is about 21,000 (I’m not sure if this is high or low) but I’m really nervous about it :’(
