REJECTED
[aB]Objective:**
SAT I (breakdown):1960(superscored) CR:640 M-620 W-700
ACT (breakdown):didn’t submit
SAT II: US History:540 Biology M:640
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):3.9
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):4/99
AP (place score in parenthesis):AP English Lang (3) AP Biology(3) AP Microeconomics(2), I did not submit these scores so I doubt they’re really relevant, lol
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: Spanish 5, AP English Literature, Gym, Chemistry, Chamber Orchestra/Full Orchestra(I go to a music school, where I play the cello in the orchestra. However, I started out playing the piano)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nada

[aB]Subjective:**

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Private Piano lessons,NHS(3 years)( I am the committee chair of the buddy program, basically a program for incoming freshmen), After school chamber music(both as a cellist and pianist for 3 years),I participate in a trio at the Bloomingdale School of Music, where I play the cello(1 year), I tried my schools indoor track team and mural club for awhile, but eventually lost interest.
Job/Work Experience:no
Volunteer/Community service:well, since I am a part of NHS I constantly do a lot of community/school service. Enough to the point that I don’t really feel like listing them out, they weren’t included in my application so I suppose they are irrelevant anyways.
Summer Activities:Summer Strings:a program my school does for incoming freshmen who do not know how to play a stringed instrument. So, basically we help them learn the basics so that once they come in the beginning of the actual school year, they aren’t completely lost.
Essays (rating 1-10, details):I loved my common app essay. So, I guess a 7.5-8. I talked about my love for searching for answers.
My woman in history was Janis Joplin(I am/was very proud of this essay), I won’t mention my majoring in unafraid one because I feel like it contributed to the rejection of rubbed the committee the wrong way(hint:it was about getting over my fear of mentally ill people, but I was being honest and myself soooo yeah…)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1:8
Teacher Rec #2:7
Counselor Rec:8
Additional Rec:can’t remember if I submitted one for Barnard, but I know I did submit one to some schools.
Interview:N/A
Supplemental material: Music Supplement(piano, I play Mozart’s Piano Sonata No.7 in F major and Tchikovsky’s “June” )

[aB]Other:**

Applied for Financial Aid?:Yes
Intended Major:something in History or Biology
State (if domestic applicant):NY
Country (if international applicant):USA
School Type:Public( 75% Hispanic and 23% black, and 1%asian and maybe 1%white,though I’m not sure) Average SAT is a 1250(CR+M+W)
Ethnicity:African-American
Gender:female
Income Bracket:less than 20,000 now that my mom is in graduate school
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):URM

[aB]Reflection:**

Strengths: I don’t know, honestly. I like to believe it was my essays, and I know they do consider those very important, however I was rejected so…perhaps not. But, then again I know there are so many other factors, ones that I likely don’t know anything about, that I could have been rejected for some other reason.
Weaknesses:Standardized test scores, Why Barnard essay, just not the most competitive applicant.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:I wasn’t that competitive and my why Barnard essay was not strong enough to convince them that even though I was not their most competitive applicant, that I was still a desirable candidate to at least wait list me.I also feel like I didn’t stand out as someone who was very strong in their beliefs. I fact, in my common essay the general theme/feel of it is: life is a journey where meeting new people and having conversations allows me to make sense of the world and better answer the constant questions that swarm my mind. As I look over this though, I probably would have rejected me too, or perhaps waitlist? :S
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: This was actually my first rejection.
ACCEPTED:
Mount Holyoke College(it’s likely I may go there, but then I would have to give up piano lessons and try to find some there…we shall see,but so far I have liked what I’ve read and seen about Mount Holyoke)
Skidmore College
Fordham University
Bard College
SUNY Albany
SUNY New Paltz
CUNY Hunter
CUNY Brooklyn
CUNY Queens
CUNY Lehman
CUNY York
CUNY City College

Rejected: Barnard College

Waiting on:
Vassar College
SUNY Binghamton
SUNY Stonybrook
Howard University

General Comments: I’ll admit I am a little upset, but not enough to cry. Barnard just was not the right fit for me and I trust the admissions committee’s judgement. Now, onwards to awaiting Vassar’s decision and going to a college tour of City College tomorrow. Hurrah!

Oh and good luck to all you class of 2017,2018,2019,2020,2021,etc. applicants who are anxiously reading these threads right now. I know I was when I was in your place.

Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community service: Key Club
Summer Activities: Trip to the Dominican Republic sponsored by Key Club but was not highlighted on application in any form
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8 - I worked REALLY hard on my Common App and supplements. Probably the best I’ve ever written was for Barnard and I made sure to emphasize my personal drive and tenacious qualities. Definitely catered towards leadership, since that is what Barnard looks for in its girls
Supplements: Why Barnard - 7 - pretty generic, but I really hit home with how I want to contribute to Barnard’s outspoken, tenacious sisterhood.
Woman in history - 8 - unique, I picked Frida Kahlo and talked about her being a revolutionary, inspiring me to “think outside the box”
Majored in unafraid - 8 - spoke about figure skating and how I found strength to persevere fall after fall.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 6/7 range, since I go to a public and my counselor has 50 other kids to take care of.

Teacher Rec #1: 8/9 - a Yearbok Advisor I worked closely with for the past 2 years. He knows me pretty well and my personality
Teacher Rec #2: 6/7 - APUSH teacher who I started to get close to. Not sure what she wrote about me but it probably wasn’t bad… LOL
Counselor Rec: 5 - I hardly know her, but she probably wrote generic, good things.
Additional Rec: 5 - a Key Club Region Advisor to confirm that all the stuff I did for Key Club was true and emphasize on my leadership skills
Interview: N/A

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: English
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female (duh)
Income Bracket: ~55k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first generation

Reflection:

Strengths: Definitely leadership, GPA, and all my writing pieces. I spent a lot of time on the Barnard essays since I wanted to paint a holistic image of myself as a person to the admissions.
Weaknesses: Test scores LOLOL (check out that 620 SAT II score)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Barnard looks for girls with strong, genuine characters who are passionate in what they do and I believe that I expressed that in my essays and ECs. I was not all over the place in leadership… I mainly stuck to a few - namely Key Club and photography/design.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: UCSD (Regents), UCLA, UCB, BU for Communications, Syracuse for Communications

General Comments: Go into the application process with a positive mindset! Your grades and ECs do not have to be perfect. Just focus on your most solid strengths as a person and express them in your essays. DO NOT BS YOUR SUPPLEMENTS. I believe they really do matter in the decision. A close friend of mine from the same school got waitlisted and her stats are so much better than mine

Decision: Accepted

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Cross country (team captain, 1st team All-State, lettered four years, couple of records), Track (same as cross country), Show choir (section leader, historian), NHS (President, PR officer junior year), Girls’ State delegate
Job/Work Experience: worked as a correspondent at my local newspaper since sophomore year
Volunteer/Community service: mostly stuff with NHS and PTSA at my school
Summer Activities: literally just running all the time lmao
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App (8/10, well-written and humorous but not the kind of thing to grab your heartstrings) Major in Unafraid (7/10, about how I almost fainted during the school homecoming pageant haha) Woman in History (2/10…I have no personal connection to Joan of Arc whatsoever and yet at that point I was so burnt out I just ran spellcheck and called it good) Why Barnard (9/10…actually just reread it and got myself hyped all over again)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: my cross country coach, freshman bio teacher, and surrogate father. 9/10 because it was really heartfelt but I wouldn’t say the most eloquent
Teacher Rec #2: APUSH teacher and NHS advisor. honestly 10/10, he was so flattering that now I feel super self-conscious talking to him haha
Counselor Rec: 7/10. Probably pretty generic but we’re on good terms
Additional Rec:
Interview: unfortunately didn’t have one :frowning: no interviewers in my area and I couldn’t get on-campus within my visit window

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: yeah, attendance is pretty contingent upon it
Intended Major: Chemistry
State (if domestic applicant): Utah
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public. would not describe it as competitive
Ethnicity: white
Gender: F
Income Bracket: too much to receive the aid my large stereotypically Utahn family requires
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): maybe LGBT? but I don’t recall putting anything about that in my app so nvm

Reflection:

Strengths: test scores and GPA, visited Barnard, the Wendy’s award
Weaknesses: APs are less impressive than many. weak on service-based extracurriculars
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I don’t know…I’m very happy though and glad that the essays I’ve been kicking myself for weren’t a deal-breaker
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted Vanderbilt, Wellesley, MHC (Trustee scholar), Mills, Utah State/Waitlisted at UChicago and Tulane

General Comments: @Malia Obama if you’re reading this…I’m prepared to live with Secret Service agents and 10000% down for us to be roommates

Job/Work Experience: N/a
Volunteer/Community service: Summer tutoring for two years/miscellaneous helping out the community. Tutoring program +HYC also count for community service.
Summer Activities: Summer classes @ UC Berkeley, SAT Prep lol
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 10, my common app essay is probably my favorite essay I’ve written in my whole life.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 9

Teacher Rec #1: On fleeeek.
Teacher Rec #2: Also fleeky.
Counselor Rec: n/a
Additional Rec: It was probably an 8/10
Interview: Kinda bleh, the interviewer seemed a bit rushed. I did get really excited when talking about Barnard/my extracurriculars so I think that showed.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yup!
Intended Major: Physics, with a possible minor in Philosophy and/or Spanish
State (if domestic applicant): California
Country (if international applicant): –
School Type: Small Charter School
Ethnicity: Black
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Between $75,000 and $100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection:

Strengths: Definitely my essays and my teacher reccomendations. I put all my heart and soul into them and I know my teachers did too.
Weaknesses: My test scores–although my ACT is within the range of Barnard’s average, this year was super competitive so.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think My essay and my life goals of being a STEM teacher and later changing on the education system through my work really vibed with Barnard’s goals. I also attended Barnard Bound, I don’t know what affects that had on my application however.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at UCLA, University of Washington, Spelman (with honors), UC Berkeley (Regent’s), Howard (with Capstone Scholarship).

Still waiting on Harvard but tbh don’t really care about them at this point.

General Comments: SO PUMPED AHHHHHH. <3 <3 <3 Barnard truly is a holistic school so do NOT be daunted by test scores or grades. Your essays and teacher reccomendations matter soooo much as this is where they will see what type of student that you are, so give them your 120% effort.

[aB]Objective:**
SAT I (breakdown): CR 710, W 710, M 620
ACT (breakdown): R 34, E 36, S 30, M 27; 32 composite
SAT II: Latin 780, World History 700
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): weighted is 3.5 (had a really bad year that dragged down my GPA)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1st quartile…?
AP (place score in parenthesis): World 4, Lang 5
Senior Year Course Load: AP Latin, AP Lit, AP Macro/Micro, AP Physics 1, AP Calc AB, Mastery orchestra
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): ton of gold medals for national exams, perfect scores on the National Latin Exam, ton of 1st-5th awards at state and national Junior Classical League Conventions, All-State Orchestra

[aB]Subjective:**

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): officer of the school JCL for three years, orchestra officer, Tri-M officer
Summer Activities: Governor’s Honors Program for Latin, National JCL Conventions
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App- pretty great, I really showed off my love for Latin and how I grew as a person with some humor. One of my Barnard essays included Queen Dido to really show off my love for Latin.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Latin teacher for 4 years; I assume it’s very good because he’s seen me grow and succeed.
Teacher Rec #2: history teacher for 2 years; I was one of his favorites, having been given an award. He knows that I’m very good at Latin and such.
Teacher Rec #3: AP Lang teacher; I really struggled in her class at first (didn’t expect to get a 4 on the exam), but I sought out her help often and ended up doing well in the class and got a 5.
Counselor Rec: Probably very good. She knows what I’ve accomplished and we have a good relationship.
Interview: Meh. Not great, but not bad (probably because it was a phone interview). I said what I needed to say, I guess.

[aB]Other:**

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: Classics (Latin/Greek)
State (if domestic applicant): GA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public (one of the most competitive in the state)
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: F
Income Bracket: ~100000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): legacy. my mother graduated from Barnard.

[aB]Reflection:**

Strengths: my passion for Latin really shined in my essays and my achievements. Great teacher recs. I also addressed how I was determined to become a better person and how I succeeded.
Weaknesses: I’m really bad at math–I’ve always had low 80s and high 70s. One year (nearly failed a couple of classes) in particular was really bad due to depression, but my counselor addressed that. I haven’t really done much for women either.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My grades rose significantly, I showed a genuine love for Barnard, and maybe my talent in Latin??
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted by University of Georgia, waitlisted by UChicago, rejected by Boston College

General Comments: for the younger ones out there, don’t lose hope. Depression is a huge hole to climb out of, but you can do it. It was difficult to become motivated, but I thought of how I wanted to go to amazing schools like Barnard and pushed myself like hell. Also, personality is super important, and great essays might make up for your academic shortcomings. Good luck everyone!

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I guess I probably wasn’t what they were looking for
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted to University of Central Florida, University of Florida, Loyola University Chicago, Pace University NYC, and Boston University.
Waiting on Princeton, Brown and NYU
General Comments: I mean I’m not completely upset because at least it’s not a rejection. I just feel like any confidence I had for my Ivies just kinda disappeared. I really hope it was a waitlist because I wasn’t what they were looking for and not because of my gpa. I hope I’m what Princeton needs because that’s my goal. Congrats to everyone who got in, Barnard truly is an incredibly school

Web Design Internship with the local middle school

Volunteer/Community service: tutoring, tutoring, tutoring; volunteered for my school’s AP Bio and Orchestra departments; volunteered for local non profits

Summer Activities: the research internship, traveling, and more volunteering for local non-profits

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App- (7/10 or 8/10) talked about how I founded the school’s major tutoring clubs and how I tutored two math teachers in calculus (I thought this would attract their attention, not everyone can say they tutored math teachers in math) it really gave an insight into the type of person I am and a lifelong experience and commitment to teaching, but I guess it wasn’t the type of hook they were looking for

Why Barnard- (10/10) talked about my interest in the Combined Plan program and about how the Morningside Heights location will let me have internships on Wall Street

Woman- (10/10) talked about Margaret Hamilton, who wrote the code that took the first rocket to the moon and about how women in STEM should look up to her

Majored in Unafraid- (9/10) talked about sexism in my extended family and how I’ve been working to combat it my entire life and how I hope to combat it by going to barnard, an all women’s school

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: (10/10) APUSH teacher- I’m his favorite student and he knows me really well. I sit in his class every day during my free period and we just talk and he told me he wrote a very personal rec

Teacher Rec #2: (9/10) AP Physics teacher- I used to go into class every day in the morning and talk with him and he likes me, I don’t know how this recommendation would be like but everyone says he writes great recs

Counselor Rec: (6/10) she barely knows me and she made us all submit biographies and resumes for her to write them so I doubt it was good at all

Additional Rec: (9/10) I had my dance and vocals teacher write this one. she knew me since I was only 4 years old so she really knows me as a person and how I grew up and changed as a person. she also knows the type of learner I am

Reflection

Strengths: everything in objective, Recs were great too and I had two internships

Weaknesses: not enough leadership. I never ran for any school office, I preferred to lead in the background (like with founding the tutoring club and being in charge of backstage at concerts)

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I am a woman in STEM and I’m also the first person Barnard accepted from my high school

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Georgia Tech, rejected from MIT and UPenn

General Comments: I was so happy!!! I’ve always wanted to live in NYC and with the 3-2 program I can major in econ and engineering, which I would have had to choose between at other schools
