Barnard Traditions (the less orthodox ones)

Hi! Okay, we’ve all heard about the Greek Games and Midnight Breakfast and all that from brochures, tourguides etc…
But can any Barnard student give me a short description of any other unorthodox, or perhaps un-brochure friendly ones?
I know it sounds a bit daft, but I’d really like to know about traditions at Barnard.

hey! i'm just a first year, but so earlier this month we had sub and the city, a subway sandwich that spans the length of the entire campus. they definitely have a lot of quirky little traditions that add a fun touch to the school year. Earlier this week they had the founder's day bbq, where they held a bbq for us in honor of when the school was founded. on the first day of classes there is also the barnard block party to celebrate the first day.

unfortunately, they stopped holding the greek games like a couple of years ago. :-( but the Big Sub is a beautiful thing; it's like christmas because we start anticipating it when they set up a few days before...but on to your question...

i would say that we don't really have traditions that are unorthodox, because it seems to me that (because of the city and not really having that ra-ra sense of school spirit) it's hard for the student body to organize things outside of clubs, etc. there are great little things though that are great kept secrets (or not really) like free food events that pop up.

i think the thing about barnard is that because we aren't really a strong community (that's not saying that we don't like each other) we really rely on ourselves and friends for fun.

ooo. Okay well. I love everything about Barnard, and it kinda sucks that traditions have died out. But i guess everything has its downside.
Do you know any girls who are rushing sororities or anything? I was told on my tour that there are only 4 sororities for columbia and barnard girls

We get to be part of COlumbia traditions too! Orgo night might just be my favorite tradition here. You sing and dance the night before finals and it's very goofy and fun.
see Columbia University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

sororities - greek life isn't a big presence here - i think i heard under 10% of people are in sororities. if you want that to be a big part of your life, it might not be the right place for you. that said, it's growing in popularity recently and the past two years there have been a lot more people rushing. i do know several girls in sororities who just love them, and to be sure if you want to be in a sorority you can definitely rush/go to their parties, but it's not a really big presence on campus.

Actually the Greek Games still happen! I have last year's t-shirt to prove it :)

Big Sub, Orgo Night, Founder's Day BBQ and Midnight Breakfast have already been mentioned, but there's also other various McAc events that happen every year (or at least since I've been here, I'm a junior) such as Bling Night, Fall/Halloween festival, Barnard Build A Bear, Tie Dye, Barnard Spirit Day (I <3 BC shirts!) etc. Also, the WBAR BBQ seems to be a pretty popular event.

I'm going to disagree with the above poster and say that there is a strong sense of community at Barnard. It might not be as strong as an non-urban school, but it definitely exists if you want it.

Primal Scream...that's columbia-wide so I feel really bad for those who live in our neighborhood and who have to listen to us scream out our windows at midnight.

Also the frat pledges serenade the quad.

Definitely lots of community...I feel like I can't walk two feet without knowing somebody

Yes! I heard about the frat thing. Good good. I love Barnard and am applying ED regardless but I've heard mixed things about the spirit on campus.
