Barnard Waitlisted Applicants Class of 2020

Exactly what the title says. Are you guys going to send in any additional materials? I was thinking about another recommendation and a writing supplement but I think it might be overkill.

i was wondering the exact same thing. i don’t want to come off as too desperate… i’m gonna consult my guidance counsellor at my school ASAP. want me to post what she says?

@5081vww yes please! I think I might email the admissions office to get some clarification as well (as I doubt my guidance counselor will be much help)

@extrapeppermint - not gonna lie, i go to a huge public high school so not sure if she’ll be much help either. but we’ll see. best of luck!! :~)

@5081vww Send them anything that strengthens your academics: new test scores, grade reports, awards, any NEW activities. A short letter saying how interested you are is also recommended, but keep in short and sweet.

Honestly, if you’re really serious about getting in, send everything. I applied ED and was deferred and heartbroken. I sent them in a writing sample of a paper I wrote, an extra recommendation, and a personal letter about why I felt it was the school for me. I also stayed in contact with the reader for my state over the few months and I got accepted regular decision. I don’t know how the waitlist works, but I definitely think the extra stuff helped me.

For the writing supplement–should I only send in shorter work or should I just send in everything I think is good work? I have a 20 page paper on Sylvia Plath that’s all about her writing through a feminist perspective which gels with Barnard’s vibe… but it is 20 pages.

@extrapeppermint Not to disagree with @mayaic4, but all the advice I have ever heard is NOT to bury Adcom’s with papers, letters and other materials. They don’t have the time to read them. The saying goes, “the fatter the file, the worse the candidate”. I’d send a short, succinct letter summarising any new awards, projects or achievements and expressing your unique interest in Barnard, along with a strong letter of recommendation from your guidance counsellor, faculty adviser or dean. I doubt they will read or evaluate a paper at this point. If you can get your guidance counsellor to call the regional admissions officer, that would be very beneficial too.

I was really worried whether I was bothering them with how much I sent. All I can say is what I did and that it worked because I really was not a top candidate in many people’s eyes. So I wish you luck.

@mayaic4 I’d say that if you were admitted, you were a top candidate! Several of my friends were discouraged from applying for the same reasons as you. All were accepted. Feels good, doesn’t it, to prove them wrong? Congratulations on your acceptance!

Hey, has anyone here who sent a letter of continued interest received a response? I sent one a couple weeks ago and never got anything back.

Going to bump this thread up to ask: Has anyone heard anything about the waitlist at all yet?

nothing yet :frowning: fingers crossed, though!

I received a call on Friday night that they took me off the waitlist!! I know a couple others who have heard too. Fingers crossed for all of you!

@alyjen that’s so exciting, congrats! you probably don’t, but do you have any clue what the rest of their timing looks like/how many people they’re looking to take off?

@alyjen Congrats! If you don’t mind me asking, did you apply for FA?

Thank you! No I didn’t apply for FA. Is the waitlist process also need-blind though?

@swarleys I’ve heard that they are planning to take quite a few off… there are at least 10 who have posted in the fb group after being taken off…as recently as this afternoon. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!

@alyjen Hi~~For those who were off the waitlist and posted in the Facebook group, was there any international students? Thanks!

@Bolorerdene Yes, there was someone from Singapore.
