My daughter just received an admission offer from Baruch for Spring 2012. She can take 6 credits in the Fall to begin her studies. She has already sent a deposit to Manhattan College. Of course the critical question regarding college education is ultimately, which school could offer the better job opportunities? Manhattan is a Catholic college with an opportunity to dorm, a close-knit community and a variety of on campus extracurricular activities. Baruch has an outstanding internship and job placement record, an unbeatable price tag, and therefore, a study abroad opportunity for a semester would be an option. However, Baruch does not offer the traditional college campus experience. A daily commute via the Staten Island Ferry and subway would not be enjoyable in nasty weather. Any thoughts???

I used to live down the block from Baruch and attended a different commuter CUNY for my undergrad degree. I also commuted to grad school by MTA so I know what that’s like.

Is it possible for the second year and beyond for your daughter to find a roommate and live in Manhattan? If you were going to pay for MC, which is a lot more expensive than Baruch, you might have the money, especially if your D works and puts a lot of money away during that first semester when she is taking only 6 credits. If she has any AP or CLEP credits that will help reduce the number of semesters needed to graduate.

If you can afford MC with no loans, go for it, but personally I am trying to have my kids avoid student loans.

My D was going to go to Queens or Hunter but she earned a scholarship that allowed her to go to an upstate SUNY with no loans.
