My son has narrowed his choices to Haverford and Middlebury. He's both a fully engaged student and devoted baseball player and is hoping to find the best of both worlds. At the moment his academic interests lean heavily towards international relations, political science and history. Thoughts anyone?

My son was recruited to play baseball at Haverford but decided not to apply. We met the Haverford coash at several showcase baseball camps and was very impressed by him. We also spoke with parents of current players and they had nothing but positive feedback. We also had some contact via email/mail with the Middlebury coach but we weren't very impressed.

In my opinion Haverford is a great mix of athletics and academics. I think they take their baseball very serious at Haverford.

Hope this helps.

Friendly curiosity...

What is it that you already know about Haverford/Middlebury in these fields... so we can answer what you don't know... and just wondering why your son isn't the one asking these questions? Anyhow...

Middlebury is well known for the strength of its international studies program. Midd's new affiliation with the Monterey Institute (www.miis.edu) will make an excellent program even better.

I personally know one Ph.D. (Carlton--physics) who works at a Border's Bookstore, one (Michigan--International Relations) who works at a plumbing supply company, and one (Swarthmore--History) who commited suicide. Whoo-Hoo! for Ph.D.'s. This is the most ridiculous concept I've ever heard of. Carlton physics?--amazingly intelligent but can't find her way through a room of people; Michigan international relator?--Extremely competent and likable person--he's happy!; Swarthmore history?--not.
My advice to you: let the kid do the searching, the asking, the choosing--it's never too early and it's never too late. Doris Day was an underrated philosopher.

hey... ever hear the joke about a "PhD"? stands for "Pizza Hut Delivery" ... obviously, i'm joking about that but couldn't resist given the last post... ummm... abrasive much? those scales and stuff give you a rough idea of eductaional quality but, in the top 20 or so, i think it really depends on you and your own effort. your son should look at the campus cultures because that is the main distinction and he should come to haverford.

I would think the weather would make baseball very difficult at Midd. I know this is one of the primary reasons they did away with baseball @ Colgate.
