My son received an e-mail about an upcoming bb camp/showcase. Anyone know how the bball recruiting works? Is this more than a camp? How difficult is it to get on the team? He's a great player, however his team hasn't had many wins.

He's already applied to USNA with the exception of the nominations (in CA applications for nominations are accepted until Oct 31/Nov 1.) Getting an appointment would be awesome, and if he could play baseball for USNA would be icing on the cake.

I can't off much in regards to chances of playing bb at USNA (our son plays a different sport) but what I can offer is this.

Before you can ever play on a team, you have to be noticed by the coach. There are several ways to do this (film, camps, etc) but one of the BEST ways where USNA is concerned is to attend one of their summer camps. What I would suggest is that your son forward a letter and athletic CV to the USNA BB coach before he arrives....your son should let them know what position he plays and what camp he will be attending.

As a bonus, it may come in a way you have not considered. The advantage lies in that your son will be able to spend a few days on the yard, sleep in Bancroft, eat in Kings Hall or Dalghren, and expereince life on the yard from another perspective. That, alone, more than compensates for any money that you spend on the camp itself.

The camps, by the way, are exceptional. They are well organized and intense, and a lot of hard work, but well worth it no matter where your son ends up.

By all means contact the coach and attend the baseball camp/showcase. The Navy baseball program was down for a few years and is now in the midst of rebuilding. Last year Coach "Kosty" was hired and there is a renewed emphasis in recruiting. The baseball stadium is also undergoing major renovations (new field turf, seating, all-season batting center, etc.).

i dont think it is too hard to be recruited intially. based on a letter i got from the coach which said "we dont get to see all of our recruits" I would say that they just see you once or twice and if they like you, will recruit you. (given that you are Academy quality). if your son doesnt play on a showcase team then i would suggest he go to the camp so he can be looked at.
