Bates v. Dickinson

Hello I’m posting this for a friend of mine who’s having difficulty deciding between Bates and Dickinson. She’s fallen in love with both schools and would love to get some CC imput!

My friend is hispanic (originally from Peru). Money isn’t an issue because of the financial aid she’s recieved from both schools. The prestige factor is also unimportant to her as is the weather. Things she’s looking for:

~ A strong study abroad program
~ A strong program in biology/neuroscience/psychology… a possible pre-med student.
~ A diverse campus with a bit of an international feel & active minority clubs. She doesn’t mind being a minority student (we currently attend a small private school so she’s pretty used to it) but would be happier if there was more of a minority presence on-campus.
~ An academically challenging environment which will also let her have a social life and do plenty of community service.
~ An active campus with access to a more metropolitan area. She does not, however, want a campus at which drinking is a huge activity.

Thanks!

Hi,

My brother goes to Dickinson and I attend Bates. I am also an intended neuroscience major who is premed. So...to answer your questions:

Stronger study abroad program? Dickinson, however, you can go abroad with any school and Bates makes that possible.

Stronger psych/bio/neuro program? Bates...it's amazing! :)

Place for community service? Bates. Lewiston is very much a community that is in extreme need of community involvement. There are tons of opportunities.

As for the party scene: There is partying and drinking on every college campus, however, there are usually lots of additional acitivies. I do not drink and I find a way to get through the weekend. I also have chosen not to live in chem free housing.

Best of luck!

ahh i left out the diversity bit. Bates is not an extremely diverse campus, however, there are minority students and they are working to increase diversity on campus within the coming years. I would say that Dickinson is more diverse.

Thanks for the feedback iceikle252... my friend appreciates it! Anyone else?

bummmmmp!!!!
