@bookmama22 have you actually been to Wes??? Even if you drive the speed limit, you are 15 min. max to downtown Hartford. You can back road it in 20.
It’s a helluva lot closer than it is to New London, and Providence? That’s like 1.5 hrs. away.
Have you actually been to Middletown?
@Midwestmomofboys , agree. Conn’s campus is lovely. To me, it is the prettiest of all the NESCACs. Bowdoin is in a lovely location - a park at the end of a charming street, but architecture hardly blew me away. Not ugly, but not anywhere near “stunning”.
And while Conn really has no stunning buildings, the layout, the view of the sound, and the architectural harmony of the place really struck me as beautiful. I would have liked to have spent 4 years there myself.
You say you want easy transport to NYC or Boston? You can get there from Bates and Bowdoin, but it’s a bit of a schlep. In other words, it’s not like you would be going there for a pizza on a Saturday night. NY is about a five hour drive…and Boston about 3. Depending on traffic…and you are guaranteed to see traffic.
However, Portland ME is close enough to both, and it’s a great town.
@thumper1 - agree. Portland ME is severely underrated by the applicant pool in my opinion. I tell people all the time how close Brunswick is to Portland, and I get a blank stare in response, as if it doesn’t count as a city. There’s a lot there.
Many chefs who have tired of NY or Boston have gone to Portland. It’s become a foodie’s dream!

I LOVE Portland! What a great small city. Loads of character. Amazing food, shops, authentic working waterfront harbor. It’s a very cool place. And boy, the flights are cheap!
