I know this isn't quite college-related but I have a friend who is moving to the Bay Area and looking for a great town within commuting to SF with a rigorous high school for her son, who will be in 9th grade in the Fall. I told her the CC parents would probably have a great response!

School could be private, public, or Roman Catholic. Any suggestions?

Also someone had a similar question a few months ago. Possibly someone else has a good memory and can direct you where to find it.
Edit- below is the name of the thread
Advice needed for family moving to San Francisco area!

I can suggest San Ramon Valley. We moved from San Francisco 15 years ago with the goal of having our kids attend public school and saving the cash for college. It has worked out well and the first of three is in the process of college applications now.

My husband still works in SF and make the commute everyday.

The search results will partly depend on what the family considers a reasonable commuting distance, and their expectations for the cost of housing.

The only private school in the Bay Area that makes the national top 10 list is College Prep in Piedmont. Fairly easy commute to SF from the neighborhood. The town has beautiful older houses, something very hard to find in the Bay Area and appreciated by those moving from parts of the country where homes have more charm than the typical CA home. Proximity to Oakland leaves prices relatively low.

If your friend’s family ends up in the east bay(Oakland, Berkeley), another private high school that they might consider is Maybeck. Its in Berkeley near UCB. Its a great little school for the quirky student and very rigorous. My son loved his four years at Maybeck. He and all of his classmates were very successful in the college application process. Feel free to pm me if you’d like more info on Maybeck.

I spent the first 50 years of my life in the S.F. East Bay Area, living in Moraga and San Ramon. The top school district in the S.F. East Bay is the Acalanes School District, which includes the cities of Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, and Walnut Creek. High schools in these cities include Acalanes HS (Lafayette), Campolindo HS (Moraga), Miramonte HS (Orinda), Las Lomas HS and Northgate HS (Walnut Creek). Another excellent school is Monte Vista HS in Alamo. In general, the high schools in the cities of San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Livermore are also very good. These are all public schools I have listed and, imo, Monte Vista is superior to Athenian in Danville even though Monte Vista is a public HS.
