Does anyone know the acceptance rate into med school from Baylor University’s pre-med program?
Idk if this is true or not but an admissions officer told me if you go through the premed committee its like 70%
I don’t remember exact percentages when we looked for my daughter but it was pretty darn high. It was the highest out of the schools she was considering which included UT Austin, TCU & Baylor. She is currently a freshmen and feels very blessed she chose Baylor.
The 70% rate is accurate from my on campus sources as well. Keep in mind, that is the rate for the students that complete the pre-health program and apply to medical school. It is a rigorous program that tends to take its toll on the 1st and 2nd year students, many switch from pre-health majors to other majors within Baylor.
Baylor has an exceptionally good track for medical school admissions. They have medical, dental and nursing schools and hospitals in Baylor Network. Not officially affiliated with each other but same people sit on multiple boards and Baylor community is dearly favored.
AFAIK Baylor doesn’t make public the pre-health student outcomes.
One thing to pay attention to when choosing a school is to understand the committee letter process/requirements…Baylor does have requirements to get a committee letter (whereas some schools will complete a committee letter for any pre-health student wanting to apply to med school). Schools supporting only the higher GPA/MCAT students will likely have relatively higher acceptance rate to med schools.
1,000 freshmen declare pre-med in a given year, 150 make it into a US med school.
I believe I saw that Rice has about a 90% acceptance rate but that’s Rice. It would be great to have a lot more transparency about student outcomes but few colleges provide that info. 70% seems very strong.
Pre-med acceptance rates were posted in another thread. You can look it up. As Rice and Baylor are smaller schools, their numbers were less but much higher percentage compared to schools with larger enrollment. It’s not that everyone gets weeded out, often freshmen don’t know what they want or get pushed in by parents, once they have an oppurtunity they pick different paths.
But make sure you know what that 70% means.
is it the %:
of freshman who say they are pre-med? no
the ones who get through Bio and Chem?
The ones who get through Organic Chem?
The ones who finish all the pre-med courses?
The ones who have a good GPA and good science GPA?
The ones who still want to go to medical school?
The ones who volunteer and shadow?
The ones who take the MCAT?
The ones who get a good score on the MCAT?
Of the ones who get that far…
The ones then who got a recommendation letter from the PreHealth Advisory committee (https://www.baylor.edu/prehealth/index.php?id=955383)?
Then 70% or 90% them get into medical school. But you have to get that far.
