I am from Ohio. OOS for both of these colleges. Deciding between UMIAMI Pre-Med (PRISM Honors in Biology) Vs Baylor Pre-Med (Biology Major). My end goal is to go to MD after 4 years.
Cost - I got a 50% scholarship and remaining will be paid by my parents. I’m mostly worried about other areas than the cost for now,
GPA - Which is the best university for scoring better grades. Grade inflation vs deflation?
Since MD admission is also required student involvement in Research, Clinical Shadowing, hospital volunteering, which one will be best for this?
Which college is sending more students to medical college? I see in ADCOMS data that both are sending around 330 students YoY but I am not sure what is the total avg. a number of people from these universities apply.
5). Professors - Which one can really add value and prepare the student to handle MCAT and easy to approach with.
I really appreciate your comments since that will help me to choose the right one to accomplish my dream of becoming a physician.
– clinical experience (does not need to be in a hospital setting)
–physician shadowing (in several fields, but must include primary care shadowing)
–community service with disadvantaged
–leadership roles in your activities.
Research his NOT required, but is a nice add-on to a med school application.
(Research is highly over-valued in importance by high school students hoping to go to medical school.)
The number in this table doesn’t show how many were ACCEPTED to medical school, only how many APPLIED. Nor does the table show how many started as pre-med freshman year but didn’t make to the point actually applying. So basically it’s not useful if you’re trying to decide which is the easier/better for pre-med.
If the costs are about the same–pick the college that offers the better social fit.
The ticket to medical school is top grades and MCAT scores. Medical schools don’t give a rat’s but about research because most universities don’t even offer it for undergraduates. It really doesn’t matter where you go. Your grades and scores will do the talking.
Keep in mind that half the smart kids coming out of high school ALL want to be doctors. Almost none of them actually go to medical school. It’s not for everyone…even if you’re a genius. As kids mature, they find hidden passions they didn’t know about. The average college student changes their major three times. Go with an open mind.
Actually…your grades and MCAT score will get you maybe to the door of medical school in terms of applying…but your interview will get you through the door!
But as WOW shows, it takes more than gpa/mcat to get to the door-quite a few things actually.
And while research is not emphasized, it can be a very nice addition to the rest of a medical school application.

My D is a first semester junior health science major/pre-med at Baylor. If you have specific questions about their program please PM me, I am happy to answer.
I had to make the same decision last year. Those were my top two schools and although they are somewhat equivalent in terms of academics and research opportunities. The decision comes down to campus, location, and preferences. I visited both and liked both campuses, but Miami felt more like home. So i ended up deciding miami and getting into the prism program following that. The prism program is a really good opportunity not offered at many other schools, so that should play a role in your decision.
I’ve visited both Baylor and UMiami campuses. Baylor, to me, seems a stronger choice for premed ambitions but if finances or other factors lean you to one of them, then go for it. Both are pretty nice about aid but of course not as cheap as public schools. Go where your heart tells you.
