DS got it too. How does Baylor scholarship work? Do they give additional?

The academic scholarship they just released is considered a “base” amount that is stackable with other scholarships from special programs and departments. For instance, I applied for the law program, and if accepted, would get an ADDITIONAL $40,000 on top of the base amount I just received. So yes, they can give more, but it’s not guaranteed.

20K ish/year merit + need aid for my S22, leaving a net cost of 50K. Gotta have deep pockets in Waco.

Any history of Baylor increasing aid offers on appeal. First choice by a large margin for my son.

@CUBuffs1 Ours was 11K so near 20K sounds pretty good to me! – 3.6 UW, 4.7 W, 1400 SAT, Class Rank top quartile

Was your package 11k per year or just the merit scholarship?

@soexhausted That was the merit offer and yes, renewable over 4 years. No fin aid other than $5500 loan (none was expected)

My daughter just checked and received $14,000 a year. No need based aid (as expected).
Does anyone have information on the appeals process and/or whether there is any room to negotiate?

Is 100k over 4 yrs merit for a student? Would they increase merit? I have twins and i just cant figure out how to afford two colleges of their choice. Don’t qualify for financial aid.

We just checked and my DS received 80K over four years. We do not qualify for need based aid. Visited SMU and Baylor last weekend. SMU is offering him $120k plus was invited to apply for Presidents and Hunt Scholars. After visiting the two schools he liked SMU better, but told him to keep an open mind until Baylor’s merit aid came through.

Always good to have choices!

@Lola1 I’m not quite sure I understand your question. Before applying, did you run the NPC for the school? Generally that should give you the idea of cost relative to your family budget.

D received a small merit package. Her merit package didn’t include honors, though it said she is qualified. Is it not part of basic, and also the usual unsubsidized loans.

I did. I knew how much it would cost us but i was hoping for more merit

Does anyone know anything about the distinction award scholarship? She didn’t apply to the distinctive scholars program so just wondering how it’s different. It’s a sizable scholarship so we will definitely be visiting.

The Distinction Award is an academic scholarship. All admitted students are automatically considered for it and awards in the past have ranged from $48k-$92k total over 8 academic semesters.

What’s the criteria for distinction award and are there interviews involved?

No applications and no interviews - my son didn’t apply for any scholarships at Baylor but they sent an email to notify him of this award.

I have heard past rumors that they give academic awards for SAT scores above 1400 but now that they’re test optional, it’s likely a holistic review of each applicant. I don’t have any inside info - just things I have heard from parents who have gone before me.

Would this still be stackable with the Invitation to Excellence scholarship to cover room and board or does it only apply for other scholarships?

From what I was told at the same scholarship weekend is that everything is stackable unless:

  1. there is a clear indication when applying that it cancels out other scholarships, which I2E does not
  2. you have reached the COA, meaning the university will not pay you any more than what it costs to attend.

So, I do believe that the I2E and the merit will stack, allowing you to pay for room and beyond the full tuition that is awarded.
