Current Baylor student. Here’s my take.
If you’re wondering what the numbers are, two-thirds of Baylor students are regular church goers and over 90% call themselves Christians. Baptists are the biggest denomination at 23% followed by Catholics and non-denominationals both at 20%.
Christians at Baylor are not expecting an atmosphere where everyone is a practicing Christian, just a Christian atmosphere, so as long as someone isn’t actively taking away from that (and what I mean by that is making snide comments about Christianity or breaking Baylor rules such as that we’re a dry campus, academic integrity, no members of the opposite sex in the dorms past 1am and during visiting hours they must always have an escort etc.) your daughter shouldn’t really have an issue.
One thing that’s really nice about Baylor is that, since we have such huge religious diversity within Christianity, I don’t think she’d feel left out. Alongside a Sunday service, lots of Baylor students will go to Bible study groups, church activities, and church service projects, but since we all go to a wide variety of different churches, it won’t be like most of her friends would all be out every Thursday evening together for Bible study, for instance and she would be left out.
On the flip side, there is, of course, a required class on the Bible, a required class on the history of Christianity, and two required semesters of chapel, but I’m guessing you’re aware of that. The other things you’re daughter might want to consider is that, because Baylor is majority Protestant, a lot of freshman will be church hopping at the beginning of the semester so she will probably be asked quite a bit at the beginning of the semester if she’s church hopping/what churches she’s looking at. And she would definitely get plenty of invites to attend church with people over her 4 years, but she would be far from the only one (again, 1/3 don’t attend church regularly). Also a notable number of students will put that they are “looking for a roommate they can do Bible study with” (or something similar) in their roommate matching bio. Community Leaders (BU’s version of RAs) and I believe also those involved in student senate & government are also required to be active in a church. The final thing is that sports games and a couple large university events will often by opened with a prayer.
Personally I think you’re kid will be fine and will absolutely love it here. Hope that helped a bit.
