Baylor?

Does anyone have any info/opinion on Baylor? Thanks!!!

All I can say about Baylor’s music program is that they were not very helpful or interested in talking to a potential student. A couple of years ago during my older son’s junior year, we flew across the country to tour Baylor. That son was interested in Engineering, but my MT kid, a 10th grader at the time came along. We scheduled the trip with Baylor a couple of months in advance, even attempting to make appointments with the music department. Both kids were able to tour Engineering, Chemistry, Honors College, and dorms, as well as meet with students and department heads in everything except Music. We were told that music only meets with students that are current seniors and my child would need to schedule a visit during the senior year of high school. We even asked if we could meet with a student, or just have a student give us a tour of the facilities, but were told that is not allowed unless the student is a senior in high school. They said they are way too busy to spend time on students that young. I told them that by the time my child is a senior in high school, we would already have it narrowed and hope to be finished touring schools by then.

The next day we toured SMU and they practically fell over backwards to accommodate us. We were given a tour, met with faculty and students, saw a performance, were given a Meadows School of Music t-shirt, and told to come back and visit any time between then and his senior year. we have continued to receive correspondence from SMU school of Music, but have never received anything from Music at Baylor (although engineering and Honors college have kept in touch).

Baylor was immediately removed from our radar after that trip (it never was really high on the list, but it might have been had we gotten the chance to see and hear more about it). There was no way we would make a special trip all of the way to Waco, Texas just to see if we liked the facilities and faculty enough to consider the school, especially since we were right there and they refused us. They do have great scholarships for National Merit and other high achievers, which was what attracted us.

Wow! Thanks @‌weski2
Where did your MT kid end up, or where is he looking? Is SMU on his list?

Hi, there. I can tell you about our experience with Baylor. Our older daughter will be a junior there next year in the pre-med program. She loves Baylor, and so do we, so we started looking into their Theater program for our MT daughter.

We did not experience any of the issues the above post described. Baylor does not have a specific MT program, but it offers a BFA in Theatre Performance with private voice lessons. Our D sat in on classes when we visited, and we did NOT visit during the audition schedule timing. Because we were going to be in Texas visiting our other D, my MT daughter just sent an e-mail to Lisa Denman asking if it would be possible to observe. She e-mailed her right back with a class list of options. When we arrived to Texas, Lisa sent another e-mail asking us to let her know when our D would be in the building and she had a current theater student meet her in the lobby. From there, our D felt warm and welcomed. The students and professors were all wonderful to her.

After touring and applying the the university, our D auditioned to the program via DVD. She was accepted and offered a very nice scholarship. Baylor was definitely a contender. I’m wondering if maybe weski2 was communicating with the music department as opposed to the theater department, because our stories re completely opposite. I can only speak for ourselves, though, and we were treated wonderfully with open arms.

Ultimately, our MT daughter chose U of Utah, BFA MT, but that is not to say Baylor wasn’t a choice for her, it was.
