BB Critical Reading Question that's bugging me

On Page 729 of the blue book, number 9 (sect. 5 of Test #6)

I put E... I don't understand why that's not the answer. Please help shed some light for me? Thank you so much - all help is appreciated

...Please?...

would you mind typing the question and options here?

Well uhh... It's a passage... So I mean, I think you'd have to look at the book. But the question itself is:

In lines 1-6, the author suggests which of the following?
A) In late nineteenth-century America, established artists were exclusively male.
B) It was harder for women artists to work alone in the studio of an established artist.
c.) It was easier for artists to sell work to magazines than to art dealers.
d.) Stephens found a way to pursue her professional goals and maintain social respectability.
e.) stephens demonstrated little regard for the opinions of mainstream society (this is the one I picked)

Hope that helps...I don't mind writing out the passage because it's only 15 lines long, but I don't know if I'm technically allowed?

My mindset is that the answer must be E because the fact that Stephens, a woman, became an artist even though "MANY" people thought it was "improper".

the real answer is D, but I don't see anything about social respectability.

I remember this passage; you could have at least typed out the sentences or the paragraph mentioning it because I don't think that the part of talking about male/female was THAT long.

Anyways, it did say that it was unusual for women to be artists. I also picked E, and I guess that they want you to assume that women would be looked down upon socially if they did become artists. Of course you can't really assume this, which is why I didn't really like ths question. But it never did say that she had little disregard for opinions of society either. I agree, this question made no sense.

I'm answering from memory as well, but I think that if you go look at the passage, you'll find some evidence that Stephens discovered or invented a way to become an artist that was acceptable to society. It's been a while since I looked at the passage, but wasn't she an illustrator or something? I think maybe she worked from home? And doesn't the passage imply that, by doing these things, she found a way to be an artist that was more acceptable to society?

These choices imply that she cared at least a little about conforming...otherwise she might have gone around wearing pants and using a man's name, like George Sand.

I went to get the book. My memory was right.

It says that Stephens "got around" social prejudice (NOT that she completely defied it) by "creating art and conducting business...from home." You're supposed to infer that working from home was more socially acceptable than working outside the home, making d) and not e) the correct answer.

Tough one.
