BB Writing Question

Pg. 480 #28

The quality of multivitamin tablets is determined by how long its potency can be protected by the manufacturer's coating material. No Error

The answer is (C) its but I can't figure out why. Why is it wrong?

the subject of the sentence is quality. So replacing it with its is wrong. “The potency can be protected” refers to the multivitamin tablets not the quality

so what should replace its to make the sentence correct?

Actually it’s because “it” is ambiguous. It does not specify if the antecedent is “quality” or “tablet”

ohhh, that makes sense. thanks
