BC Freshman here

Hey all, I’m a freshman at Boston College and I was a college confidential addict like all of you at this time last year… and I know how helpful it was to talk to people that actually went to BC… so if you have any questions and want answers from a student, feel free to ask me. I don’t really go on here that much, so if you IM me at lancerxEVO19 it’d be a lot easier.

To get a few quick things off the bat - BC’s religious stereotype isn’t true at all. I’m a Muslim and I thought that the “BC is a Catholic School” thing would hurt me… but BC isn’t really a Catholic school it just has Jesuit “tradition” - which is actually pretty neat. The religious scene at BC is the same as at any other school - they don’t push any religion at you, you’re free to practice whatever and in fact they can assist you in finding courses and even places of worship for any religion. Don’t worry about the religion thing and don’t let it hold you back from going to BC - it’s truly a great school and the experience for me thus far has been amazing.

IM me for more if you need to - lancerxEVO19

Hi,
I'm interested in BC's Business School. If you can provide any information on it, it will be helpful. internships, professors, difficulty etc., . Thank you.

I'm in Arts & Sciences... so I don't know too much about the Caroll School of Management, other than the fact that it's a good school. Internships here at BC aren't hard to get at all, they have several info sessions about them, and a lot of information about summer internships abroad as well. Professors overall here at BC are pretty solid, but I don't know any specifics about the ones at CSOM. Difficulty varies with professor, but overall the workload here at BC is moderate. It can get tough, but it's not consistently tough, and it's pretty manageable.

Thanks for the response. Does BC have interviews for admission? Would you pick BC over NYU?

I dont think BC does interviews, at least I know that I didnt have one and my friends from my high school that go here didnt have one.... yeah Id pick BC over NYU any day. BC isnt located in Boston, its located in Newton/Chestnut Hill, so it has its own campus and town feel, while you can easily go into the city of Boston which is a few miles away. NYU on the other hand has very little actual "campus" area and its right there near the city. Its a matter of personal preference, but if you want a really nice campus with a city within a few miles, BC is the right choice.

how are the parties over at BC?
I hear everything revolves around the football games?

the parties, for the most part, definitely revolve around the sports. this is because BC is a huge sports school, with great basketball, hockey, and football teams among a lot of others..... there are parties that are off campus on weekends, so its not really that hard to find a party when you need one. attending sporting events is a party within itself, theyre really exciting and lots of postgame parties happen after victories. you can easily get away with partying in the dorm rooms as long as you dont blast music past quiet hours and stuff.... so its not a huge deal.

What are the freshman dorms like and how is living on Newton campus freshman year?

frosh dorms arent bad.... youre either in a regular double, regular triple, and sometimes a regular quad or regular single. most freshmen are in doubles..... the bad part about living on upper (the main part) campus is that there are a lot of "forced triples" - 3 students living in a room designed to be a double. on newton, there are no forced triples and you live among all freshmen. im on newton and my experience so far has been amazing, and in fact better than my friends that live on upper campus. check out bc.edu/reslife for more info on dorms and stuff

Hi Zdawg,

I was just wondering what the workload is like in Arts and Science. I realise you mentioned that its moderate however as i may be going as a exchange student i was just wondering how many hours moderate means (we may have different ideas due to different high school experiences). If you hand in your work and it answers the question does that usually result in a pass? or do you have to work really hard just to pass? I have heard colleges in the US can vary alot. Do many people fail? I work hard at home but I dont want to be stuck with my nose in a book all semester while in another country.

I hope it is ok that i use this forum. I realise its designed for students wanting to get into college.

Good luck to everyone who is waiting for EA. I remember waiting to find out if i got in to my university. It was so stressful! Hang in there.

sid - well, by moderate i meant average or "doable" in other terms. it varies for each class, but you'll find that you're not doing much more work than your friends here or roommate, unless of course you're doing premed. i have found that if you just turn work in with answers you'll pass, but if you take more time and take in what you learn you'll get better test grades and definitely write better papers..... about people failing - it depends on the class. none of my friends or guys on my floor are failing any class, although that doesnt mean everyone is doing well. first semester youll find yourself maybe not doing so well, as i did, because it takes time to adjust. once you learn how to balance studying with hanging out and having fun, youll be fine. its really up to you how much you want to study, youll find yourself studying a lot some nights while barely doing any homework another night. hope that helps. good luck everyone

hey zdawg913,
thank you for helping us out.
can we also do a dual major from two different college? (ex)accounting degree from CSOM, biology from College)
is it possible?

Yes, that was alot of help. Thanks zdawg!

rosiedaisy - no, you cant do that, at least not to my knowledge..... id ask the admissions office though. you may be able to minor in something at another college, but im not even sure about that either. my assumption is no

zdawg, can we be admitted into the honors program our second year?

To answer you drinkingmilkalldaylong, yes. If you are able to garner a high enough GPA, I believe you are offered a spot in the Honors program. The website also says the school does this after sophomore year.

Is there anything else you can tell me about the social/ party scene? For example do parties take place at houses off campus, in dorms, or in the city?

i posted about the party and social life above.... when youre at BC youll find that you dont go into the city of boston nearly as much as you think you would... hanging out with friends in the dorms or off campus is usually how social life works at BC

this is probably a weird question, but are bc students generally good-looking or not? I dunno just wondering.

How cold does it get there? What is the temperature now?
