well, being pretty close, in CT (close averages to boston, maybe a teeny bit warmer here) i can say that its about ohhh 35 right now i think.... they typically get a little more snow up there in boston.... sometimes it can get down to the single digits w/ neg. wind chills but that doesnt normally last more than a week in the winter...

its in the high 20s these days.... we had a pretty big snowstorm last week but other than that it hasnt really snowed much... just really cold with the wind. it gets in the teens and single digits with wind chill, just a typical northeast winter.

Does it snow in december every year (or at least when classes are in) or is this an early winter?

I looked up the averages, but i was unsure if the snow stuck around or if it usually snowed at night then just melted until Jan came when it got extra cold. I saw that the BC website had a picture of the campus coverd in snow, it looked so pretty.

i dont really know the snow schedule since its my first year... its just a normal winter i guess not a big deal.

hey, i just got into the CAS and want to know whether to select newton or upper. the main issue i have with the whole thing is that i have to go somewhere to study...even now in hs, i go to starbucks to get my work done--so would it be more beneficial for me to live on upper?

What are the arguments in favor of upper campus that you've heard?

Yes, big thanks for helping us out zdawg!

Yes! it snows in December, I'm from CT and my brother goes to Holy Cross in Worcester(not too far from Boston) and we get plenty of snow each year during December.

irishkate, i am unsure if i am supposed to post other webpages but since it was advertised here i dont think it will be too much of a problem. www.campusdirt.com had some students commenting pro and cons of upper and newton. Hope it is of some help!

Thankyou for the weather info. It will be fun change to get a chance to experience snow on campus.

thanks so much

irishkate - with regard to newton vs. upper.... you can really study anywhere you want, its easy to study in the dorm room when its not loud, and each dorm building has both an entertainment lounge (big screen TV, surround sound speakers, billiards, etc) and also a quiet study lounge (bunch of tables and chairs and wireless internet) - the study lounges are great places to study. you can also study in a building called stuart on newton, and you can TRY to sneak into the law school library (newton campus is the law school), but they usually dont let us use it. you can always take the bus to upper like youll do every day and study in the library.... i dont think its really a problem. i wasnt happy when i got put on newton after requesting upper, but after spending my 1st semester on newton i dont regret it at all. in fact, if i knew itd be this great i would have requested newton from the start. arguments in favor of upper - basically just easier access to things. for newton, you take a bus. for upper - you walk, although it does become a lot of walking because of stairs. newton is all freshmen, while upper is a mix (i like newton because of this, its great to live with all freshmen)... thats all i have time for right now..... keep the questions coming

If I were you I would do everything I could to get on upper. Upper is all freshmen, just like newton. Amenities-wise, the two campuses are basically equal. The only difference is upper is at maximum a 10 minute walk from everywhere on campus, while on newton you have to take the schoolbus. While I don't know anybody on newton that doesn't absolutely love it, the administration recognizes it is a small problem and eventually it will be phased out and all the freshmen will live on main campus.

I wouldnt put it as "i would do everything i could to get on upper." it isnt as bad as that at all.

How far is everything on campus? i take it from bacchanalian that to walk from one end to the other would take a max of 10mins?

I dont know if i will get into the dorms i may have to live off campus so i am just trying to work out the logistics.

No, you're right, newton isn't bad at all. The only thing that really distinguishes the two campuses is having the ability to walk versus relying on the bus. Maybe I was just spoiled by being able to walk places, like I said I've never met anybody who didn't love newton.

One end of campus to the other is maybe a ten to fifteen minute walk, but there is a ridiculous amount of stairs.

True, living on upper does give you "easier" access to things, but the downfall to that is that you have to walk for about 10-15 minutes and it is a lot of stairs. Although you have to take the bus for Newton, its about a 5 minute ride and it drops you off right at main gate so the walk after that isn't bad at all. Also, the Newton Bus has several stops around campus after 3pm. From 7am-ish until 3pm-ish the newton bus is "Eagle Direct" - it takes you from 1 stop on Newton to the main gate stop of main campus. After 3pm, the Newton bus stops at a few stops around main and upper campus, as well as all the newton stops. So basically, if you're not riding the bus, you're walking and doing a lot of stairs, and vice versa.

Oh no, stairs are evil!

where i am atm is built on a large hill. Going down the hill is obviously fine but if you have to go up i want to stop and have a coffee half way im so buggerd heh.

Is this just randomly situated stairs? or does it tend to be on a hill so its either for or against you.

Are you able to take the bus after three to different points on campus? or is it only for the newton students?

It looks flat from the pictures, how misleading! heh

boston college is not flat at all. to give you an example, the "upper campus" everyone refers to is just the dorm area. then theres main campus, which has all the buildings of the school, and then theres lower campus, which has the athletic facilities, and more dorms for upperclassmen. then theres newton obviously. theres 2 buses that run at BC - the newton bus and the commonwealth ave. bus. both are accessible by anyone.... you just get on and off as you wish. the comm. ave bus runs around the BC campus (not newton though) and to a few stops on comm. ave (the main street of the area/boston). the newton bus and comm. ave bus have the same stops around BC, except the newton bus goes to the newton campus and the comm. ave bus goes on comm ave. this is not really a big deal, i didnt know much about it as an incoming freshman, nobody does until orientation, so i wouldnt worry about it at all. newton or upper, youll live in a nice area.

is it true that the majority of people walk around with their collar up?

haha.... umm although BC is known to have the stereotype as a "rich kid" college, not a lot of people pop their collars. how about real questions?
