BC Freshman here

NF318, its very simple, Your part of the application should be sent in online before the deadline. Your school's material (transcript/let of rec) can be a little late. So even if your schools material is postmarked a little later, I doubt the colleges will give you a hard time. So send everything, dont sweat it.

thank you for the post

George Formans, coffee makers, hot plates are not allowed in the dorms nor are decorative lights (only during a 6 week holiday season), lava lamps, 2 prong outlet cords or a lot of other things you'd think you could have. HOWEVER...keep them hidden during room inspections and don't be dumb and leave things plugged in and you are golden.

this year, the RAs (at least mine) arent very strict with regard to what to have in the rooms. people on my floor have foreman grills, weve had lights in the rooms for way longer than the christmas holiday period, and lots of people have coffee makers or blenders and stuff. the things that the people of ResLife hate most though is 2-pronged extension chords, and they just take it away at room inspection. if you have things in the room that arent supposed to be there (foreman grills, etc) they will just take it during room inspection and youll never see them again.

Or when ResLife randomly knocks on your door you can throw a towel over your contraband since they can't search your room and can only confiscate what is in plain sight.

Sorry to keep bugging you with questions but i keep reading about american colleges and grade inflation/deflation and was just wondering where BC stands with this.

I assume that deflation means that grades are scaled against a curve? (limited number are allowed to get high grades)

Or do i have it all wrong...

Here i go with more questions ...

With vacinations are they very strict?

I read that you need to have

1 meningococcal
Tetanus
Mumps/rubella

and 3 doses of Hep B.

I know i have some of these but where i am everyone gets them at school but i dont have paperwork to prove it. I suppose i will have to get blood tests and hope they show up on that.

i dont know how strict they are with vaccinations, i never really thought about that. i wouldnt worry about such little things like this, you can probably get the school to document something saying you got them there, or have your physician fill something out.

At Boston College very few classes are graded on a 'curve' but some are. It all depends on the professors. BC is not noterious for grade inflation or deflation, and if you are a good, smart, hardworking student, no grading policy will help or hurt you.

most of my classes this past semester were on a so-called "curve," and it was beneficial for most students. BC, like suubie said, isn't really known for inflation or deflation, its just something nobody really talks about since it isnt a big issue. You don't have to be the smartest kid to do well, you just have to be hard working and willing to put forth effort that the professors will definitely see. Some professors, like my calculus and microeconomics professors, gave final grades based on your effort as well. For example, if the professor noticed a trend of improvement on your exams, he or she would weigh each exam accordingly, which is a great help. Also, on some essays, professors write notes attached to them saying that they have seen progress in your work, and your class participation and effort grades definitely have an impact on your overall grade.

This question might have been answered before, but i was wondering do most students remain on campus for four years or do many live off campus? If they live off campus, where do they live (houses near campus or apartments or where)? Last question, for students that live on campus senior year, what is the housing like?

When do parties start. I ask this because after reading about some other schools it appears for some schools parties are only on the weekends, but other schools its parties all the time for those who can? What is BC like

Thank you xsuubiex and Zdawg!

I was a bit scared after reading about students from cornell etc who were complaining about how tough the grading is. Good to hear that BC is not renowned for being tough.

most students live on campus for 3 years and off 1 year (junior year usually). some students get 4 years guaranteed, and they can live on campus for all 4 years. other students, like myself, only get 3 years guaranteed, so ill have to look for an apartment for my junior year. off campus housing is usually in apartment-style, and it seems like a lot of fun. most of the parties take place in these apartments. the senior housing, known as the "mods" are basically small houses on campus that arent that great looking but are a lot of fun to live in. lots of parties take place at the mods, but they are usually just seniors taking part in them. parties are usually just on weekends, and its sometimes hard to find a good one, but theres always something going on.

Thank you. You have been alot of helping while i have been trying to make a decision.

Is there a curfew for the dorms? (For time and people allowed in)

There is no curfew for your dorms but there is a curfew for your keycard, because until a certain time your keycard can open any hall, but after a certain time it can only open your own, or soemthing liek that, but there is no room check of anything

there really is no curfew for anything except the card. after i think 2am, your access card only allows you access to your dorm, although sometimes that doesnt even work and you can access all of them. thats not really a big deal though, since theres always people to open the door for you if you need it. BC is pretty lenient about curfew, and you dont have one unless you get into a lot of trouble of some sort. however many people you want can come and go as they please, regardless of what time it is, but quiet hours are enforced (well not really enforced but they exist) after 10pm on weeknights and after midnight on weekends.
