I’m a senior and am thinking about applying here. I’m an international student, and in the future I’m thinking about going to med school.

But i was wondering how the science department in BC is? i would like to major in premed, human biology, biochem…somehwere around there. just want to know how academically good the science is there :D

I hear that the chemistry department is top-notch. One of the faculty members of that department has won quite a few science awards not too long ago.

BC places pre-med students well, but their school philosophy does not support a focused science study, which is only a factor if you are more interested in research. Sciences are good, plenty good enough for med or grad school, but not as good as the more science or technical focused schools.

That’s primarily because BC requires more core non-science courses than other more technical schools, as well as science courses outside of your major. They want you to investigate a wide variety of science and humanities, which leaves less opportunity to focus on specific science disciplines, not that its bad. BC and their professors focus more on teaching than research. The undergrad bio and chem labs are in rough shape from what I hear.

Biology and chemistry are big on campus, however. I think over 50% of the students are Biology or Chemistry or Bio-Chem majors. Most participate in the pre-med program and are quality students. Bio-Chem BS majors have a very demanding course schedule.

Perhaps due to its focus on the liberal arts, BC does not really give much credit for lab courses, either. Sure, a lab counts as “1” credit, but that means nothing bcos a typical student still needs to take 5 academic subjects per semester to graduate on time. (BC counts courses towards graduation and not units.)
