I am considering pre-med path at BC and wondered if any comment or advice about this program at BC? It looks like my AP credits will allow me to place out of 2 natural science core and go into one on the pre-health sciences w/lab Freshman year (likely bio, have to confirm this). What years do students typically take Organic Chem/Chem & Physics? How is advising? Any groups or clubs that you’d recommend getting involved with freshman year?
What is your budget for a full 8 years?
Would you need to take on any debt for 4 years at BC?
What alternatives do you have?
In terms of when to take organic chemistry: I would not take it during your freshman year. We occasionally see posts here on CC from students who take organic chemistry freshman year and are suffering. One daughter took it a bit later but described it as the most difficult B- that she ever had in her life (she said this before she started her DVM classes, which are mostly just as tough). Our other daughter postponed organic chemistry until her junior year of university and said that it was not that bad. You really will be a stronger student in a couple of years than you are in your freshman year of university.
Thanks for Organic Chem advice! Will need to finance some of med school costs if I get there, just trying to get a sense of how students track their required pre-med classes by year and how rigorous at BC…thanks for advice!
I planned on pre-med at BC and graduating with a biology this year. I’m still planning med school but an untraditional path with probably 2 gap years. Classes are really hard. They are graded on a curve, but it’s a hard curve. I didn’t have to drop any science classes but probably should have my freshman year because my grade point average suffered. I took organic my junior year. I probably didn’t take advantage of the advising available and because of that, I loaded up too heavily on tough classes all at once. And I definitely enjoyed my college years, but it seemed easier for my buddies majoring in political science and finance. I hung out with them and probably should have spent more time on studies. Unfortunately realized that more my junior year, but was hard to make up for my lower gpa. BC has been great. I don’t regret going here at all, but if you plan on pre-med it’s not easy. It can be done, but you are going to have to be focused on day one and maybe not have as much fun as your friends. Good luck!
