BC v. Mich

What is harder to get into Boston College or U Mich Ann Arbor out of state? Explanations welcome.

strictly in terms of admissions, BC is much harder to get into with an admissions percentage nearly 2x lower than that of Mich. granted, these aren't the only things that matter, but if you want an answer that cut & dry i suppose this is pretty good -- by the same token though, Mich. has about 3x as many students so they actually reject way more students than BC does i believe

University of Michigan

Boston College

But...needless to say UMich is the better school :D

out of state i'd say michigan would be harder to get into in general, although it depends which school you're applying to at umich.

BC is a private university, so whether or not you're OOS shouldn't really matter. But it does matter for Mich, because it's public.

OOS doesn't matter nearly as much as most people think for Michigan, which has no quota or cap on OOS students and is currently 35% OOS, one of the highest percentages for any public institution.

As far as which is more difficult to get into, that depends what you mean. Boston College has a lower acceptance rate, which means they reject a higher percentage of their applicants. But that stats of the entering classes are almost identical at the two schools: BC middle 50% SAT scores 1240-1430, Michigan middle 50% SAT scores 1220-1420, but Michigan relies mainly on the ACT with middle 50% scores of 27-31 which according to one widely used conversion chart translates into SAT of 1240-1430---identical to BC. BC reports 80% of entering class were in the top 10% of their HS class, Michigan reports 90% of their entering class were in the top 10% of their HS class.

The only conclusion I can draw is that if BC is rejecting twice as many applicants (on a percentage basis) and at the end of the day has a class with virtually identical stats, it must be that BC is generally selecting from a less qualified applicant pool.

Bottom line: if you have a 4.0 unweighted GPA, top 10% of your class, and 1430+ SATs (or better yet for Michigan, 31+ ACT), you're a strong bet for admission to either school. Below that level, it's chancy, and the lower your stats the less likely you'll be admitted.. But all the way down the line, your chances of admission to either school should be pretty similar notwithstanding BC's lower admit rate.
